Classical Arabic Sheet Music
Dear fellow oudis,
I'm very happy to announce that I've finished a long-term project of mine and now have available a book of sheet music devoted to Arabic instrumentals
such as Sama'is and Bashrafs.
The book is made up of my painstaking transcriptions, all based on multiple recorded sources as well as other sources. The focus is on music by Arab
composers, but I have included a number of Ottoman pieces that have become part of the Arab repertoire. All pieces are based on Arab performance
practice and are in Arabic notation.
More information is available here: OudStrings.com - Classical Arabic Instrumental Music
Feel free to ask any questions you have.
As a gift, here are a couple of pieces I did not include but would like to share:
Sama'i Nahawand by Cinucen Tanrikorur (this is based on Simon Shaheen's version, entitled "Bosphorus Scenes Under the Moonlight") and Sama'i Bayati by
Marcel Khalife, from his album "Caress."

Congratulations Brian!
Do you know of any CD's from Amazon or of a youtube clip that plays Samai Nahawand by yusuf basha. Do you know from what country Yusuf Basha is? I
recall this name for an egyptian musician.
Thanks
Adel

Thanks, Adel!
This recording has several Sama'is, including the one by Yusuf Basha (aka Pasha). I don't know where he was from. There was an Ottoman Vizier by
that name, but I don't know if it is the same person. I would guess so, it seems a number of Ottoman rulers were avid musicians and composers.
Classical Arabic Orchestra of Aleppo
This is, mysteriously, the same record with 2 fewer tracks:
Classical Arabic Orchestra of Aleppo
They both seem to be repacked versions of this recording, with taqasim added in:
Salah Arram - Golden Strings Orchestra, which claims to be from Egypt.
I'll have to check and see what other versions I know of.

Thanks, Tom!
It was a tremendous learning experience for sure. If this one proves popular, I hope to be able to do a second volume.
I love these old instrumental pieces. It's also very helpful for learning, since the 1st khana and taslim tend to describe the seyir of the maqam.

Hi Brian,
Just received the package in the mail. So far it looks very well done, and I really appreciate your foreword and explanations.
Nicely done!
I look forward to playing through these transcriptions and hopefully using this book as a teaching tool as well.
Take care,
Mavrothi

Yusuf Paşa 1840-1895 ... don't know details but he was a neyzen grandmaster and great composer (his Segah pesrev is an ultra famous part of the
repertoire and a must for every neyzen student)
