are these from manichean manuscripts?
there are also pictures of oud players playing for the Iranian Shah. I dont remember if its from the Sassanian or Parthian period.

Hello,
That is an Uyghur language manuscript from Turpan from VIII.century.
This picurtue was cover Hungarian edition of the maniaichean Pearl Authems book.
I think this instument really looks like a cobza....

True, I will find out more about the cobza.
It also looks very much like the of Nanyin pipa (China & Taiwan) and the Gagaku biwa in Japan.
This makes sense as the Chinese records plainly state that this instrument was imported from Central Asia.
