After I'd been working on basic right-hand technique for a few days and felt ready to try learning a maqam, I was totally mystified when it came to
figuring out what to do with my left hand - which finger to put where - until I found this video clip last night demonstrating maqam Bayati. After I
watched it a few times, I felt as if I'd been given the key to cracking a code. With a half hour of slow, careful practice, I could play the first
octave of the maqam with some confidence.
