Pickups for Oud
Hi
I ´m looking for good pickups for oud to play in live preformances.
When I play in big places with my band, the sound man every time makes wrong things with the oud and it sounds terrible, because when he turns up the
volume, no body listen to the oud, and when he turns up the oud volume, there is a that terrible sound "Piiiiiiiip"...
When we play with low volume, there is no problem.
I play with a Shure-57.
A friend told me that this problem will solve with a pickup, So I am looking for oud pickups. Any body know about this issue?

Hey,
I always recommend (and use) K&K pickups. They make great and affordable internal and external models. For something to easily install
externally with no need to modify the oud, check out the Twin Spot (stay away from the Big Twin, too much bass frequency) - K&K Twin Spot
Combined with a nice preamp, like a Fishman or something similar, you'll get a great sound. I usually place both piezos behind the bridge (towards
the base of the oud), one on the treble side, one on the bass side. This tends to keep the oud from sounding too twangy or too booming. But feel
free to experiment with a buddy for placement, you play the oud as he/she holds each pickup on a different spot while playing through an amp.

I have a K&K Sound Pure Classic installed underneath the face of one of my ouds. A very very nice pickup. And the really nice thing about it is
it has 4 heads (piezos) which you can adjust placement on to get the best sound.

How is it easy to install pickups under the face of the oud. I would rather not have all those wires across the face of the oud if I had a pickup
system like that. Is this something I could do myself? Without taking off the face or major surgery etc...

Samir,
The internal ones that Ofadel has are really great too, but require the help of a luthier to install. You can do it relatively simply by removing the
large rosette and drilling a hole into the base of the oud. It's best to have a professional do this to prevent any needless mistakes/damage. I'd
say the internal pickups will provide you with the best sound and feedback prevention, but occasionally they will need to be checked b/c over time
they can loosen and cause snapping sounds and decreased volume while playing (easy fix if this does happen, make sure to use enough glue in final
placement of pickups to help prevent this).

Hi Adel,
I use a Najarian transducer. You can contact Viken Najarian through his web page: http://www.oud.net/index.htm
The Najarian pickup is encased in wood (looks OK) and is affixed to the face of your oud with padded tape. The fixing is not permanent, so you can
take it off to use it on a different instrument or move it to adjust the sound. Najarian is based in Southern California, USA.

I have a Najarian pickup also. The nice thing is that it's very unobtrusive (sounds real natural, too). It won't totally solve your feedback
problems, though (no pickup will) - but it helps a lot. You (or your soundman) should be able to adjust EQ settings to cut out the problem frequency
at high volumes. You may want to try an EQ footswitch to get the best compromise in tone and volume.

La verdad es que ya mandé a comprar una capsula de Najarian y me llegará en un par de semanas más.
Ya veremos que pasa, me imagino que tendré que adquirir también un pre-amp para equalizar correctamente.

Generalmente, el sonido del Najarian sin pre-amp es bueno y calido con mi amplificador de guitarra. Sin embargo, generalmente, cuando mi laud es
amplificado en una systema "PA" el sonido es debil, particularmente en registro bajo. Tal vez sería mejor usar un pre-amp con el PA.
Solamente mis pensamientos...

I thought I should mention I have an extra K&K pickup. It is the same as the one I had listed above (The Pure Classic). It has four heads on it.
I got an extra one for another oud of mine but didn't use it. And I have decided not to install it or ever use it and keep the oud au natural.
Thus, if anyone is interested please let me know. I bought it for $92, and would be willing to part with it for $80. It is in the orginal box and

I have got the Viken Najarian Transducer, and it ´s excelent, No more Noise, no more nothing, just Plug and Play.

Soy Adel, el que plateó hace unos meses atrás el dilema de los Pickups.
Adiquirí la capsula de Viken Najarin y es excelente. No hay ruidos, ni acoples ni nada, solo enchufar y tocar.
Estaba en deuda con ustedes para contarles como me fue, asi que ahora tienen una opinion más. Ideal para tocar en vivo.

i 've been playing k+k in the past as well. now with my orinental-acoustic ensemble i just play with microphones. there is no need for a pick-up.
but i will play with a loop station in the near future so i will need a pu again
