Said Chraibi, maqam & oud questions.

Dear all, I would really appreciate some help with the following. There are some modes listed for pieces recorded on Said Chraibi,s fine recording "La clef de Granada". I wonder if anyone can provide the scale notes to these maqamet?. 1."rama el maya" mode. My work on this leads me to think this is a natura d minor scale( nahawand on d) but would like to be sure. 2. "hijaz kabir" sounds like usual hijaz on d. 3. "Ushaq mode." 4."Tarz nawin mode." 5."Choukfaza mode". Also does anyone have contact details for the Casablanca based oud maker Khalid Belhaiba?. My thanks in anticipation. Regards, Charlie.

Shawq Afza

Tarz Nuwin, is Kurd on C + Hijaz on F, according to Scott Marcus' sources.

C Db Eb F Gb A Bb C

it continues into the upper octave as hijaz on c.

raml el maya is how araboandalusian music designates a nouba and tab3 (nouba is like a composition composed of several pieces and tub3 is a scale, like an arabic maqam).
Here below you have the scheme of the tub3 and the 3aqd (3qd is the basic tethracord like the jins in arabic music).
I took this fm http://yafil.free.fr a complete web with lot of theory and infos on araboandalusian music.
I frankly haven't gone through it.
This araboandalusian music is a huge world which i will like to work more.

Zalzal, Thankyou so much for your help, It makes things much clearer and will help me as I work through Chraibi,s music. The system you illustrate is similar to that found in much Spanish composition. Love it when these cultures meet. Charlie.

I also think, after much listening, the Raml-Al-Maya from "La clef de Granada" Said Chraibis opening improvisation uses the following mode: D E F G A B half flat. C D.

Hi,

I have been in Casablanca this summer and met Khalid Belhaiba, he is a master luthier and a nice guy. The new OUDs he make are rich in sound and a beauty. You have to pre-order 6 months or give him a call before he can build one for you. He does it with passion he told me. Sometimes very hard to get him on the phone.
I have been in his atelier couple of times and he even envited me to a prived music soire with his Friends like Said Chraibi and Azouz and all other good OUD players in Casablnaca. What a night!
I still contact him and will probably build a website for him in the future. I will also post some pictures of his work very soon if any one is intersted.

Excuse my engligh.

I might be wrong but from what I know ram almaya is like dorian mode on d using what you could call an ascending descending seyir because the fifth acts almost like a tonic. I think it can modulate in short phrases to normal minor on d and to d major.

Here is Sami elMaghribi himself singing a piyut in ram almaya:

Hope it helps.

Also Samir, It maybe good to post these pictures on a new post with a new title as they will be viewed more. If you do, remember to put the word "pics", "photos" or "pictures" in the title. C
