Oud Repair--cracked back

Just thought I would share this. I received an Ibrahim Sukar oud with a horrible crack along the back spanning two ribs. One rib was even cracked across the grain. Instead of gluing the crack back together--it took lots of force to close it--I decided to replace both ribs with a new one. I got a bit whimsical and used a contrasting wood for the new rib-- Curly maple.

Cracked Oud

Jameel,

Congratulations ! I didn't know who ended up with that oud from my friend Nader. I am familiar with it. I was thinking of doing the exact same thing to it, but I got too busy with other projects. I am so happy you got to work on it.

Great job ! Bi alf kher

Nice job and thanks for sharing -- educational for me.

Interesting the way the neck is attached. Hope that wing nut has been super glued or epoxied on the bolt so it won't work itself loose.

I remember Dr. Oud saying something like that the soundboard is dead in the region above the soundhole. I guess the extention of the finger board cutting into the top will not affect the sound much since it is the dead region.

How does it sound? Sound clips?

Jameel, nice work! Mabrouk! This was a really cool idea to use a lighter wood in the center, who knows, the crack may have been the best thing that ever happened to this oud (aside from your fixing it).

Enjoy it my friend!

Take care,

mav

Awsome job Jameel, way to go man!!!
I'm glad the oud ended up in your hands even though I knew that my friend Spyros would have done also an amazing job fixing it. Either way, I share my friend Mavrothis' coment that the oud was lucky to be fixed like that.
Nice sound too, thanks for the video clip :airguitar:
To answer the question that was posted regarding how the oud was damaged. The oud damaged through shipping. At the beginning the damage was a little crack in the back but when the shipping company returned it to me the crack got bigger because they returned the oud in the box after they emptied all the peanut foam so in other words the oud got more damaged because it was in an empty box with no protection. Anyway, enough tragedy, thank God Dr. Jameel save its life and now the oud is fully recovered.
Thank you jameel for that.
