To All,

Following the success of this meet and to keep the spirit alive I suggest we give some thought to the 2009 meet. The more notice then the easier it will be for us all to secure time of work or avoid clashing with other engagements etc. The venue was fine and so I hope Awad and Kelly are up for another gig. So lets crack on yeah?

Regards

Charlie

Hi Charlie

How are you doing my friend - I think it would be a great idea. We had talked about Oxford and London but I'm up for Manchester aswell, I thought the venue and company be fantastic. A bit of forward planning and maybe more of us could turn up.

We could, as mentioned earlier, all work towards a particular makam or piece so we have something in common to work towards ... nothing too frantic but if we all interpret say Huseyni for example , it would be great to see how we all, with our different backgrounds, express this.

Best wishes to all

Leon

BTW Awad if you want me to edit the video footage into uploadable and meaningful chunks onto Youtube I would be happy to ... I have Adobe Premier on my PC and I'm not afraid to use it:xtreme::xtreme:

send me a U2U

Cheers mate

charlie oud - 11-5-2008 at 09:25 AM

Hi Leon, I'm fine mate, hope you are aswell. The maqam idea is a good one, it would be fascinating to hear how we all deliver the same maqam. Cheers, C

Owain-Hawk - 11-5-2008 at 11:30 AM

Hi you two, I'm up for meeting again anytime, the sooner the better I guess. :buttrock: I might be going away at some point though, before or during Christmas time, so I hope it won't interfere with that date (which isn't set yet).

Leon, I'm not sure I understand you, about learning a music peice? If we learnt a piece wouldn't it come out the same as everyone else, or did you mean spice it up a bit? I'm currently working on Bint El Shalabiyya (Fairuz), maybe you could try that.

You mentioned Hussieni, and I have never really played that maqam before, as far as I understand, it's mainly used in Turkish? Anyway, I gave it a go and try to play 'Turkish style', I hope I didn't embarras myself too much.

Hi Owain, thanks for U2U. Hope you are well mate. Im assuming Leon means an improvised Taqsim rather than a set "tune"?.:airguitar: Cheers C

Ararat66 - 11-5-2008 at 12:49 PM

Hi you two

Just got back fom the fireworks:D

Yes I meant Taksim but it could be done as taksim or as a piece in that maqam like 'Huseyni Saz Semai'. Best to keep it open for each of us to interpret I reckon as we can bring our different traditions and flavours to the meeting.

Kids are in bed ... time to play oud:xtreme:

Owain

You didn't embarress yourself, theres some lovely little passages and tonal developements in there. I think your playing up to now has (from what I've heard) had a very nice Arabic feel and IMHO would really benefit from you listening to Turkish, Armenian, Greek and Syrian styles also.

There's a point at which they meet beautifully, and you may find that now and then;)

Nice playing

Leon

Owain-Hawk - 11-5-2008 at 02:21 PM

Thanks for feedback Leon, but who do you recommend I listen to? Are there certain players that have a traditional Turkish/Armenian style?

By the way, there are two Armenian music sheets on issaboulos.com, maybe you are interested... I thought of perhaps learning them myself to get a feel for that sort of playing.

By the way Charlie, try taking Sunbati's style up, I reckon it would suit you.
