string length = 54.3 cm

Notice how the bridge on this one seems to be put on backwards? Though looking at it makes me think this way would be better.

It's the same oud,or barbat or lauda, whatever. The bridge was a replacement, with a forward tie block. I replaced it with a center tie block as all Nahats had. The soundboard is original, in my opinion; the pegs and pegbox are an original Nahat design as well. I wonder if a Turkish or Persian player ordered it with this configurtion?

Hi Richard,
This design similar to barbat and laouta have always existed in Lebanon and Syria but was never very popular, in Lebanon they call it "oud Akkar", Akkar being a region in the extreme Northern Lebanon and I've heard the name "Nashaat Kar" used in Syria.
A lebanese luthier, George Bitar, still make it on order and I think that Ibrahim Sukkar in Aleppo also still make it.
I've seen it recently used in Lebanon by a band of 5 ouds. don't remember the name of the group.

Thank you Alami, this is very interesting information. I have seen other Nahat ouds made for children and women, but not one with this longer neck before. Here's a picture of 1889 Abdo hanum and 1930 Abdo George hanum. BTW, "Ashkar" a the Persian word for "small".
