Kamil Mowais 1982 For Sale

alfaraby - 7-18-2010 at 11:10 AM

Kamil Mowais from Nazareth is undoubtly number one Palestinian luthier, who started building ouds back in 1959, and still working in a small workshop near his house. Mowais is the only luthier I know here, who still makes outstanding inlays in mother of pearl and amazes us with his fantastic artistic designs. Our friends Nizar Rohana, Simon Shaheen, Adel Salameh, among others, use to drop by once they're in homeland visits, to keep in touch with the walking legend. I myself haven't met any Arab or Jew oud player in Palestine &/or Israel, who does not - or didn't - have an oud of Kamil's, as a must (except of course for those whose father is a luthier himself, like Joubran Trio & Khaled Joubran :) ) !

Kamil followed Abdo Nahat footsteps in building his first instruments. As a carpenter he first used to repair ancient ouds brought to his workshop for some minor maintenance works, & Abdo Nahat's ouds among others. He decided to follow Abdo's style, he most liked of all styles he had seen. The first ouds were as expected a failure, but soon he discovered Abdo's bracing & soundbox shape & structure .

Since 1974 he has quit carpentry & devoted himself to luthiery . Since then, he managed to build hundreds of masterpieces, but unfortunately he didn't use to number his ouds, so this info just gone down the drain.

Here's the basic type Kamil used to build in the 70's-80's.
It's a 61.5 cm string, 4 pieces top spruce, mahagony & beech wood soundbox, walnut bridge, well maintained and recently repaired by the luthier. It has been in use by a professional oud player since 1995, who has recently upgraded to another Kamil's (last photo), so he'd let it, in its Sukkar's hard-case, for a reasonable price of 1000 $ + shipping . Please stay queued & don't push . I've convinced the owner to introduce Mowais to the Forum through his oud, and he just "bought" the idea !

Photos & sound sample attached.

Jameel,

How are you my friend?? that's a beautiful oud. let us hear it ;)
Yes you can get paid to the same account and then that money can be used whenever you buy stuff with paypal or you can transfer it to your bank account with some fee.

I notice there's quite a bit of buzzing (e.g. 0:41-0:43) in your sound sample. Is this a regular feature of the oud?

Alfaraby - 8-26-2010 at 02:57 AM

No Sir, this ain't a "feature" in this oud. It's more like a stain on a 1 K$ suit, that can be easily removed. New strings do buzz a little in the beginning, but they sound all right after they've sit properly on the "bench". This recording took place an hour or so after the oud had been stringed with a new set, so worry not. You're invited to examine the oud yourself & diagnoses the case, once you're around, if ever.

Secondly, sometime it's a matter of style. A player may not take this specific instrument into consideration when he plays it, the same way he might have played his own . A player should adapt a different approach for every oud, and maybe "learn" it's weaknesses before he plays it. Give me any excellent oud, and I'll let it buzz as much as I may desire, except perhaps for an extremely high action oud.

Cheers Ameer
