Hi,
yesturday i have bought my first Oud, it has 9 strings, 4 coupled and a single one, the single and one couple are metallic and the other 3 couples are
nylon.
ive tried searching for information to answer dilema but with no luck so far..
what troubles me mostly at this moment is how to tune the instrument, all the tuning information i can find is for 11 string Ouds.. lets say the
standard tuning is - C-F-A-D-G-C (based on arabinstruments.com online tuner)
which string is un-needed on my oud ?

First, I would say get a decent set of strings, most of the strings you get with these ouds are not so good. If you don't want to get that, I think
the tuning for you is FADGC or EADGC depending on the strings. So, for your nine strings the tuning for each strings from top to bottom (lower to
higher pitch) is F(or E) AA DD GG CC.

thanks for your answer it helped me alot 
also, as funny as it would sound, the oud has another 3 unused pegs which i thought at first was only for aestetic purposes... silly me, yesturday ive
finally had some free time to play the oud again and ive noticed that beside the 3 unused pegs there are also 3 unused string-holes on the bridge...
i guess it all comes clear now that the shop workers just didnt put all of the strings..

Sigh, this just never ends. So many inexpensive ouds come with 9 strings, and everybody starts out anxious and confused. Yes, the most
logical would be to tune it like a 5 course Arabic, F(E)AAddggcc, leaving out the bass-most C, but you really don't know for sure unless you measure
the gauge on the strings, measure the scale, and look up, or calculate, the tensions. But, since such strings are an unknown, and generally of
terrible quality, the smart thing is indeed to order a standard 6 course Arabic oud set, like a D'Addario J95 or a LaBella O80, or a Daniel Mari, and
restring as the more modern 11 string 6 course CFFAADDggcc. If your nut only has 9/10 notches, you can either string the oud as a 9/10 string 5 course
(leaving off the bass string), or you will have to re-notch or replace the nut, as per many previous postings on this forum.
