Where can I purchase a cretan laouto, cretan lyra, and a politiki lyra? I would be interested in playable instruments for a novice. Rare woods, pearl and diamond inlays, etc are not desired but rather something well made and affordable. I realize this forum is for ouds but the lyra and the laouto are similar instruments-I am hoping there are some people here who play them. There are very few posts on this forum tho about them.(I already searched AND googled)

one of the best makers of Laouto and politika lyra is dimitris rapakousios @ dimitris ouds.com. I have a Cretan and mainland made by him and they both are fantastic..stelios petrakis also make traditional cretan lyra in the old style that are incredible...steliospetrakis.com..d best of luck..

I purchase a cretan laouto for a long time now, I would like to find a nice and well playable instrument . I often see high priced instruments ( read above ), surely amazing instruments but too expensive for a first one.....It seems there is no middle quality production....or very confidential may be?

It is for both tunnings made by Dimitris Rapakousios.
He has send it 3 weeks ago.
Brand new,the woods are very aged Mahogany and Greek aged wallnut, the fingerboard is ebony, soundboard aged sitca spruce and wooden rosette.Keys are Golden Grover.
It's a professional quality Instrument, the highest quality possible and is available on a promo price.
For details I can send by e-mail.here are some pictures and a video. The craftmanship on the keybox is made of horn.
Amazing easy to play with and low action.

Francis, I haven't found a inexpensive laouto that is worth buying. Because of the steel strings and tension on the instrument a poorly made instrument will end up unplayable with high action. it is better to get a quality instrument from a reputable maker or you usually just end up wasting your money. best of luck.

for a politiki lira (klasik kemence) you might try seyda hacizade - a young woman who is making liras in istanbul. (her name is pronounced (sheyda). email: seydus@yahoo.com.

i bought a medium quality kemence last year i am very happy with.
