Oud Bass?

Sazi - 11-29-2010 at 05:26 PM

There are what look like 2 bass "ouds" @ 0:25...

A close-up of one @ 1:49...

Anybody ever seen one or know anything about them?

(I can't understand what they are talking about).

Has this been on here before or something?

I did a search and found nothing...

Mee too, Sazi. I was thinking a while ago, that it would be nice to have a bass oud being tuned an octave lower than a regular arab oud.

I solved this problem by buying a Godin A5 5-string fretless bass, which I can tune to CFADG instead of HEADG without problems. Because it sounds very contrabass like, it's a nice addition to oud.

But if I imagine an oud ensemble on a stage, such a bass oud would look better, though I'm not shure, if it would sound deep enough compared to my Godin or even a real double bass.

Interesting topic!

Sehrud

Hi Sazi, Tach Aymara :wavey:

Here you can see the turkish bass-oud called
Sehrud

There must be some clips on youtube from a small orchestra performing in a old church in Istanbul, where one of the musicians plays a Sehrud.
Unfortunately I dont find it now, but I`ll post it if i find it back.

Cheers,
Marcus

It seems, I was more lucky ;)

I think, you ment THIS video?

Compared to a Turkish oud the Sehrud is really bassy, but in comparison to an arab oud it's more like an oud with a big body ;)

It's frequency range doesn't compete with a western bass.

Very interesting instrument though.

PS: A further Youtube search for "bass oud" revealed THIS well known guy :D
