Quality Oud in the Bellingham/Seattle WA or Vancouver, BC areas?

DMaguire - 1-21-2011 at 05:23 PM

Hi all,
I'm new to the forum, and interested in learning the Oud to play live music for belly-dance performances. I live in Bellingham, WA (about 80 miles north of Seattle, and 60 miles south of Vancouver, BC). I was hoping there may be someone out there who knows where one could buy a decent-quality Oud in any of those cities (I already know there's nothing in Bellingham, that I've found, anyway). Turkish or Arabic, it doesn't matter. I'm mainly looking for something with low action and little or no "string buzz", and good tuning pegs. I hope this doesn't sound too naive, but is it possible to get those qualities in the $500-$700 dollar range?
Thanks for reading!

Hello again all. I've reviewed some threads on the forum, and what I'm primarily interested in (at this time, anyway) is ease of playability and structural integrity/tuning stability. excellent tone would be great, but in my price range, I hope to settle for the first two characteristics. Local preferred (of course, I'd like to see and play it first), but I'd consider buying from a member of this board (will research prior to purchase, of course). Thanks again!

Sort of nearby oud for sale

Hiya - I hope you're having some luck closer to home, but I just wanted to say that I have a couple ouds in Portland (closer than Istanbul, anyway) - I think the "short fingerboard" one might suit your needs but I'd have to ask $1,300 for it (includes hard-shell case) - that's what the maker (Mustafa Copçuoğlu) sells that one for out the door from his shop in Istanbul (or did two Junes ago - may have gone up since).

There's a video of me playing a different oud at the link below, but it's one that is the same model, and was made literally the same day by the same maker - to me the sound the same (I bought them both to sell, but got hooked and kept the one I play in the video) - http://www.uweb.ucsb.edu/~ederer/misc/ud/ud.html.

If you're interested let me know - maybe we could figure out a way to meet halfway (I guess I'm about 3-4 hours south of Seattle). Either way, best of luck! Eric.

@ Plum_Pasha,
Thanks for offering (you're the closest person so far, definitely driving distance). However, I'm afraid the price is beyond my means to pay at this time. Cheers, and good luck on a quick sale!

700$ is good price , you can purchase a costum made oud . but beware of Sukkar , Gawharat Al fan Ouds.. etc. those are tourist ouds with high prices .

How can you compare Sukkar`s with Gawharat Al fan Ouds ?
Have you ever played a Sukkar, especially a younger one? I guess not, otherwise you would not say this.

Btw, who is the luthier of the oud you play in the youtubeclip in your signature?

Hello Marcus, Yes I've played Sukkar Oud Model 6 . and trust me .. They buzz like hell. Sukkar is hiring a variety of oud makers to build more than 50 ouds a day. It's not surprising . it's tourist Oud trade. Same with Gawharat Al fun .

Anyway, I'm playing begginer egyption oud made by Ahmed Abdulhalim .
