Replacing a missing nut

Paul Kelly - 5-20-2011 at 12:25 PM

Hi
I recently acquired an Arab oud from a friend who found it in a rubbish bin - no I can't understand it either. It has a maker's label in Arabic, I can't read it. It's in poor shape - missing 6 tuning pegs and most importantly the nut.
Has anyone got any ideas where I could get one - mail order in fine. Most sites sell risha and pegs, but an 11 string nut is hard to find.
I'm in the UK - a place where people put an oud in the rubbish.
Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul

You can get nut blanks through ebay listings bone or hard wood are good. you will have to cut and file to shape unless you have a friendly guitar repairer or luthier in your area. 12 sring nt blanks tend to be wrong spacing/dimension
. the string spacing depends on neck width but generally ( according to Dr Oud construction book) space of 1.5 mm between the singles in a pair and 5.3 mm between each course. this is based on neck width at nut of 38 mm. this will also allow approx 2mm at either edge eg treble and bass. Try Jameels oud blog for more details and search on this forum also.

Where abouts in Uk are you? and what kind of oud did you rescue. I witnessed similar treatmentl in New York also!!

I dealt with them some time ago for a bridge, they were kind and honest.
Good luck in this restauration.
By the way I would be curious also to see the oud you found by this way.
