Music Therapy for People with Disabilities

David.B - 9-3-2011 at 10:37 AM

OK, this might be unconventional, but I'm looking for articles connected with Music Therapy.

I'm working on a dissertation for a school that teaches how to support people with disabilities. I think I'm doing the right thing by combining my work with my passion. And here your help would be valuable to me. In fact I read there is not a long a message "makam in the news" about "Turkish doctors call the tune with traditional musical cures" -> http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/aug/28/turkish-doctors-traditi...

Which was treated with derision is for me a subject of study and I will be very grateful if you could post here all you know about it. For my part I know that "The theory of music in Arabic writings (c. 900-1900)" by Amnon Shiloah, covers the topic Music and Health: http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=11455 but $ 460.35 + $ 3.99shipping it's a bit expensive.

Also another link to an article in French: http://futuremusicotherapeute.blogspot.com/2010/02/des-innovations-...

This book seems to be specified towards music therapy for nerological
rehabilitation but I'm sure its methods could be applied to people with
other disabilities.
Music Therapy and Traumatic Brain Injury: A Light on a Dark Night by Simon Gilbertson, David Aldridge @Amazon.com

If I find some free articles dealing with this issue, I'll post them. :)

David,

Here is a site I found when looking at this subject last year:

Thanks Rambaldi47, traumatic brain injuries can lead to disability. So this book fits perfectly into what I want. By cons I'll do a tour of horizon on the web before buying anything.

Thanks Greg, "music existed before language." : the article starts really good!
I'm a fanatic of Bruce Chatwin's books : "I know this may sound far-fetched, I said to Elizabeth Vrba, but what if I were asked, "What is the big brain for ?", I would be tempted to say, "For singing our way through the wilderness." ... She replied, smiling: "I also believe that early hominids were nomadic." The Songlines.

The relations of the Turkish music tonalities (makam) with the organs, times of the day and their astrological effects are explained in detail in the book calles Haim Bey Mecmuasi. Does anyone have this book?

I just found a nice place in front of the Palace of Versailles, an association that produces Terranga -> http://www.teranga-show.com/

It is far from what I do in my ESAT ...

bulerias1981 - 9-6-2011 at 09:08 PM

David,

After reading this post, I remembered a good friend of mine in Lebanon was writing her thesis on music therapy. She is a good singer and oud player, and also studied with Ghada Shbeir, Charbel Rouhana and more. I'll get you in contact with her about this topic.

David.B - 9-7-2011 at 01:06 AM

Hi John,

I'm really interesting because I'm split in two : my little knowledge is about eastern music and music therapy in France is focused on western theories. So, if her thesis is available I would be glad to read it, in French or English ... Thanks!

Bonjour David,

David.B - 9-7-2011 at 03:47 AM

Merci Robert !

bulerias1981 - 9-7-2011 at 09:24 AM

You'll just have to talk to her. I'm not sure if its in development or completed at this point.

Insiste !

;)

David.B - 9-7-2011 at 10:37 AM

No problem John, I have a few months before me. It's still a draft in my mind...

I came across this site : http://www.mireille-marie.com/site/Further_information-47.html

It's a perfect link between music therapy, oriental music and France. Check out Tora Ta Poulia, on the right, there's a oud on the recording. By the way, it's not about internship, but about training. It's not about handicap. It's expensive and the mystic resonance doesn't correspond, this mix of different cultures sounds good and equally bad, like a fool grabs

It's perhaps tragic that the most idiotic concepts sit on an equal footing with old-fashioned wisdom. The amazing fact that people find it easier to believe that we were created by random evolution than by an intelligence was already symptomatic of our era.

On the other hand, one should not complain. It makes it possible to try new things out, all the easier in a world in which you can easily convince people that when jupiter is in Aries, olive oil enemas will make them levitate. Better than an era when they would burn you alive for disagreeing on fine points of dogma! It's wonderful that it's possible for you to combine your passions! So go forth and find the jewels in the sand!

I would even say science, to Greeks during antiquity. The theories of Pythagoras make me dizzy ...

I found the name of Mireille Marie on Wikipédia -> http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musicoth%C3%A9rapie

"L'Euphonie Vocale, musicothérapie vocale, créée par Mireille Marie, artiste et pédagogue qui intègre des mouvements corporels du Yoga des derviches, des chants sacrés et du chant improvisé."

I learn to disabled people how to condition different kinds of goods, wash clothes, trim hedges ... and they are paid about 100 euros per month. This is supposed to be pedagogic, and give the impression to a person with a disability to be part of society. And I can proudly say : "I take bladders for lanterns!". I could be 'crucified' for such words, and it's easier to live in a collective lie. So, I don't think this era is wonderful. Lying is just watered down. Oh yes, we were talking about religion and superstition, but I wonder if it's so important ...

fernandraynaud - 9-7-2011 at 06:42 PM

Attends, attends, I want to understand clearly. Who is paid 100 euros per month? The disabled you teach? What do you mean by "I take bladders for lanterns"? And, still, aren't silly lies better than inquisitions?

We don't appreciate how quickly everything changed. The French revolution was just a few generations ago. And before that, the renaissance just a few generations, and then we are in the medieval mindset, in which everyone's truth was determined by religious decree, and disagreement was handled by execution. I may deplore today's confusion, but I cannot imagine returning to a world in which everything is 100% certain, as decided by dogma. There have been waves of people wanting to return to such simpler times, they rather like uniforms, and they are generally not nice at all. I'm not worried when people say they are not sure, even if they're willing to consider what I consider nonsense, like psychoanalysis, or checking the astrology in the newspapers.

David.B - 9-8-2011 at 11:22 AM

Hi Tony, I'm really exhausted and, even if I like digression, I won't have enough energy for a diatribe.

I just want to come back on what I said : disable people are NOT EXPLOITED, the way they earn money is complex. I'm cynical but I do not share my opinions about society at work. I'm professional. OK it's a paradox, and so, who cares? So many paradoxes in this world ...

I'm going to make a work about music therapy. This work will be about observation and analysis. It will be skinny, because this is not the purpose of my training. If you want, I'll give to you a copy, then you'll be able to criticize something concrete.

David.B - 9-8-2011 at 11:38 AM

Thanks David,

My draft gets more and more concrete. I realize what is possible, and what is not. What you post will give to me new avenues for the future. Because I'm convinced of something : play music brings more than the act of screw and unscrew a bolt.

David.B - 9-16-2011 at 09:41 AM

This morning the film 'Elizabeth' was playing on TV during my breakfast. At a time, her astrologer says "astrology is an art". As I wrote it above, art can be consider as a science (music during antiquity), and religion can be seen as a science (I should say, science can be a doctrine of religion). Boundaries and definitions vary, it's a question of place and time.

When I read :

My artistic point of view is concerned about personification : Aries, fire, yellow, bones, brain ... About the scientific way a makam is supposed to heal, I'm not competent. But I'm going to check out an occidental modern method about music therapy, I still don't know if it will be about the passive or active method, perhaps the two are entangled together.

In conclusion I'd like to quote Martin Luther King :

"Softmindedness often invades religion. ... Softminded persons have revised the Beautitudes to read "Blessed are the pure in ignorance: for they shall see God." This has led to a widespread belief that there is a conflict between science and religion. But this is not true. There may be a conflict between softminded religionists and toughminded scientists, but not between science and religion. ... Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge which is power; religion gives man wisdom which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not rivals. They are complementary. Science keeps religion from sinking into the valley of crippling irrationalism and paralyzing obscurantism. Religion prevents science from falling into the marsh of obsolete materialism and moral nihilism." "

Hi David I am glad to hear of your interest in this.

I have 15 years experience and a Master's degree in music therapy. I would love to point you toward specific articles that may be of use to you. It would take me to much time to type it all here, but perhaps a 15 minute meeting on Skype would be useful to you.

In my current work as a music therapist I work in the palliative care ward of a large hospital. The hospital bought a Shehta oud for my use and I use it often (though not nearly as much as I use guitar).

I have recently been invited to write an article about the use of the oud in Western music therapy practice. It will be sometime though before it is out.

David.B - 10-13-2011 at 01:30 PM

Great!

Really good news, at last one today :)

My e-mail/messenger is on my profile, just send to me yours and we will arrange a meeting. See you :wavey:
