Oud Strings binding

izler_ - 11-16-2011 at 03:25 PM

Hi everyone, i need to know how can i bind the strings on oud.

The problem is whenever i bind the strings it seems so comlicated, i mean it gives dirt view.

Is there any suggestion to bind the strings to seem nice looking.

For example, " you can start 1st string and after, take 3th one...."

http://www.oudcafe.com/stringing_and_tuning.htm shows the order of stringing to avoid a mess in the pegbox

Hey guys,

what about the following way of stringing the oud?

It is different to the order shown on oudcafe. Which order would you recommend?

Hi izler :wavey:

I, and for sure many others, had the same stringing-nightmare.
Always to much stringlenght left to strore properly in the pegbox?
I was wondering how do the Oudmakers know how long the string must be to fit with the right amount of "go round the pegs" (sorry, my english is really bad, hope you get what I mean;) )
Finaly I solved the problem by stringing my ouds from the pegbox to the bridge. It still did not look as perfect as, for example,on Usta Turunc beautys, but much better than ever before.

Maybe one of the oudmakers of the forums can help us ???

Cheers,
Marcus

Even though I've been playing for 10 years, I keep the stringing pages in the Mutlu Torun book open and follow them whenever I restring my oud. If I don't, I always manage to mess up a step, and have to start over again!

When changing strings I don't remove all the string at once, I only work with one at a time. It is time consuming, but at least this way I ensure it stays the way it was to begin with. Compared to other instruments it is very confusing, well perhaps it is easier than a kanun or a kora...

I too check Mutlu's book as a guide.

To Keving,
Nothing to do with ouds in the strictest sense, but I would like to thank you for the link you posted alongside your intervention, the link regarding the Sufi website. It's great!
I wanted to ask you which reputable zawiyah you could suggest in London, or even better, in Sussex. I embarked on my tariqah some time ago, but it's not easy to discern which is which.......I was wondering if you could advice me.......
Thanks and Peace
Giorgio
