Here are a couple of things I recorded this afternoon:
Doulab Nahawand
Baladil Mahbub (Abdel Wahab)

Do you have the sheetmusic for both pieces or was it
all by ear?
spacelooper - 10-20-2004 at 05:27 PM
what kind of Ud are you using?... it has a very nice low tone...
Brian Prunka - 10-20-2004 at 05:38 PM
That's my Najarian oud . . .
David, I learned the pieces by ear, but I have since written out the sheet music. I posted Baladil Mahbub on this site somewhere . . . search for it
and it should be there.

I just tried searching for the music, but it seems to have disappeared . . . if you want, I can re-post it

Hey Brian,
If you could post the sheet music, that would be great. Also, do you have the original song with lyrics? If so, do you mind posting that too?
One final question. What is the definition of a doulab and how does it differ from taqssim? Thanx in advance.
Brian Prunka - 10-20-2004 at 07:05 PM
This is an instrumental piece, as far as I know there are no lyrics. It's on the Abdel Wahab "Bellydance" CD.
A doulab is a short instrumental piece, used as an introduction. It's composed, unlike a taqsim.
here's the music in pdf format

there is a balad el mahbub by Riad al-Sounbati that has lyrics, but it's a different piece.

Brian great playing...
What mic did you use for the recording?Oud isnt the easiest instrument in the world to get a really nice recording sound...and you got it.
I would like to hear your recording-setup.
Thanks in Advance
Nikos

Thanks for posting Brian – keep them coming!
Also much thanks for the PDF sheet... now I have my work cut out for me!
Your oud sounds wonderful! On another thread you mentioned the recording app "Logic" - so you're on a Mac?
david - 10-21-2004 at 09:48 AM
Thanks for posting up the music Brian!
Brian Prunka - 10-21-2004 at 03:19 PM
Hey guys, thanks for your comments. Recording myself makes me realize how hard it is to get a consistent, accurate performance (and still maintain
feeling!) . . . it really makes me appreciate even more the great musicians who play flawlessly every time.
as for the recording, this time I used two condenser mics, both Chinese, sort of generic but marketed under the Marshall brand. One is a
large-diaphragm mic, the other is a small-diaphragm directional mic. I put the directional mic fairly close (about 10") and the large diaphragm
farther away (about 18") to capture more of the ambience. I didn't EQ the mics at all, but I did obviously add some reverb (i don't
live in a cathedral) . . . too much reverb, now that I listen back to it.
I do use a mac, but logic isn't my favorite program for recording; I prefer protools.
Hey Brian
