Laila Mourad - Yama Arak Ennassim

Rambaldi47 - 7-3-2012 at 11:24 AM

Lyrics: Ahmed Rami
Composer: Mohamed Abdel Wahab
Debut: 1938 in the movie Yahya el Hob

I had a question about the maqam of this song. The opening music
starts in Kurd but resolves in Bayati. The first verse is definitely in
Bayati but I'm not sure about the rest of the song. I appreciate
your help.

maybe you should look into BAYATI - hijaz - rast, try it on your oud

To me it sounds like it's starting in bayati; no kurd.

it's clearly a bayati on C intro... my mistake

Thanks for your help, ameer and chaldo.

Is it common to find pieces in Bayati on C? I thought the tonic of
Bayati is usually D and can be transposed to G and A.

Chaldo, I actually learn these pieces vocally, though I wish I could play
them. When you say to look into BAYATI - hijaz - rast, you
refer to the opening music, right? Can you please break it down
to the individual notes? If Bayati starts on D and goes to Hijaz
it's called Shuri. Is it still called Shuri when it starts on C?

The exact note the tonic is on isn't all that relevant. Tune your oud down a wholestep and you can play bayati on C. This was particularly common in the first half of the century. If you're feeling adventurous try playing bayati on C in standard tuning. I still don't get the second right all the time.
