Buying arabic Oud in İstanbul

Fabian - 8-6-2012 at 05:07 AM

Hello, my name is Fabian and I'm a hobby oudist from Germany. I'm currently in İstanbul and wanted to buy an Oud (Arabic style), Saz or other Arabic/Turkish Instruments.

I'm here until 9 August and searching for a middle priced Instrument . Someone could give my advices? Maybe someone from İstanbul could help me? Or anyone knows non-tourist shops with English speaking shopkeeper/luthier?

And if someone of you bought an Instrument here, what is the best way to transport my instrument back? (I'm flying with Turkish airlines).

Thanks for reading! Best regards,
Fabian

Welcome to the forums Fabian.

If you use the 'Search' button in these forums you will find many references to Istanbul based musical instrument makers and resellers. The question you ask has been asked and answered many times in the past.

My experience of Turkish Airlines from four years ago is that they are kinder than many other airlines when it comes to the transportation of instruments as cabin baggage. But you should check directly with them as their policies may have changed.

Hi Fabian::wavey:

I bought a custom-made oud in Istanbul in April fromVeysel Sarikus . Its a brilliant instrument but not really "middle priced"( if you mean something like 500€ or so ) But maybe he have a ready made one in your pricerange. Try it out!!

I flew turkish airlines too....no problems at all to take the oud to the cabin, no one even ask what it is. Maybe because it was in a hardcase, so everyone can see it`s an oud.

Btw.: where in germany do you live?

Cheers and good luck on your oud-safari,

Marcus
