The sculptor seems to have had some notion of accurate representation - in which case those ouds are being played in a fairly odd position. Is any
instrument held that way today?

The way they're cradling the bowls in their arms is something similar to how the azeri tar is held:

But it would be much harder to do that with an oud!
It may be that the artist has them lowering their right hands like that for stylistic reasons rather than striving for accuracy - the position of
everyone in the scene is one of deference to the man holding up the cup - the king, or something?

Good point about the musicians being in humble positions before the king.

Here are some pictures from Dunhaung from the Mogau caves on the Silk Road, western China.
These lutes have acquired more Chinese characteristics, but are in between the barbat and the modern pipa, same as the current Japanese biwa.
Ziryab is known to have changed the wooden plectrum to a eagles quill.
There is a tanbur similar to the Ottoman style and Cheng harps and other Chinese instruments.
And a Seljuk bowl.

From the 7th to the 10th centuries -mostly Sui and Tang Dynasties.
