I have almost given up looking for biographical info on this extraordinary composer, musical genius and oud virtuoso. Any suggestions? I would even
accept an Arabic version even though my Arabic is rudimentary. Part of the problem maybe because the name has so many different spellings. But I
have drawn a blank on google. Thanks in advance for your help.

A good beginning is here: http://www.amar-foundation.org/thetimeline/
look for 1906/1907 and you'll find a paragraph on Riad Al Sunbati, as the name is spelled there.
here you will find more, spelled Riyad Al Sunbati in the text and Sumbati in the url:
http://www.oud.gr/riyad_alsumbati.htm
there are other places on the web. The different spellings help as well as hinder.
here's another: http://www.arabinstruments.com/112730/Riyad-al-Sunbati
I'm sure you find more! what an unusual musician he was. Both of his time and universal somehow.

try this http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=11401
I think the thesis has a great intro plus you have the description of each of his famous taqasim...
Sunbati rules!
