Listen (& watch) to what oud, Dr. Mamdouh Al Jabaly - one of the best temporary Egyptian oud players, is playing here !
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSyrumkgjw0
What a pity !
How could someone in Jabaly's stature allows himself to play such an oud in such an important occasion like the annual "Arabic Music Conference &
Festival", held in Cairo in 2010 ?
No wonder why this player and his Egyptian colleagues are going nowhere, while less talented players make better careers playing better ouds.
Well, Jabaly still one of the most convincing players in Cairo. Sometimes he played better ouds, to which you may listen. But this ?
Hell NO.

Hi Alfaraby,
what exactly is your problem with his/this oud? altought the recording and sound engineering at this particular event may not be the best - the oud
sounds fine (syrian sound) to me. some people like that sound... some prefer crisp and loud turkish ouds.
please don't jugde oud players about their choice of oud.
your prefered sound may not the be the prefered sound of all players/listeners.
great video and player anyway! thanks for sharing.

They have a Shure SM57 on the oud, what do you expect? That mic can work for acoustic instruments in certain situations but a condenser is almost
always better. I don't think the oud sounds bad. It just sounds like an oud mic'd with a 57.

This oud sound pretty good to me and if I am not mistaken is made by Maurice Shehata.

Also remember that maybe its EQ in the mix is set bad

Thanks friends for your interesting points of view.
This who loves this kind of sound is entitled to his opinion, with all due respect, the same as I am.
To my ear, this is a very sick oud sound, whether it's a Shehata's or whosoever's. I don't have a monopoly over good sounds, but I trust my ear, one
of my last organs that age hasn't reached. Well I mean yet .
I don't like this kind of sound. What can I do about it ?
See ? Age has already reached my brains.
I have a good Shehata and had many over the years. This one is less successful than tens of Maueice's oud I've seen and heard. By writing good players
bad ouds, I meant that Jabaly deserves better oud than this "one". I wanted to write another extremely negative word, but I changed my mind, just
before posting !
Here's for example a better one of Maurice's, played in Cairo by the talented Saudi tenor A'bbady Al Johar .

In any case, no offence was meant, especially not to my dear Egyptian friends everywhere. Sorry guys if you were hurt ! I just did not and could not
mean it.
