New oud from Husseyn Sabsaby + VIDEO UPDATE

suz_i_dil - 11-17-2013 at 07:27 AM

Freshly received :)

It has been a pleasure exchanging with Huseyn. He is a great and trustful person.
I'm very happy with the oud he made me, so just wanted to share pictures of it and a short record.

Regards !

Hello,
some asked me a video of this oud, to get another kind of recording of the sound.
So here is a piece I catched once. Unfortunately I cannot remind the composer. If anyone can tell me who wrote this piece, i would be grateful.
Best

Beautiful...I recently saw a great concert by Syrian player Kinan Idnawi, and he was played a Sabsaby oud. It made me want to get one...do you mind telling us how much you paid for this instrument? Was it shipped? Congratulations on your new oud!

suz_i_dil - 11-17-2013 at 11:17 AM

Indeed this walnut bowl is beautiful
I didn't knew about Kinan Idnawy, thanks to made me discover.
Regarding the price it is still the same than in previous thread about Husayn Sabsaby, a thousand dollar all include (shipping and box).
But it's always tricky to write down the price as they may change depending on situation.

SamirCanada - 11-17-2013 at 08:06 PM

what a beauty. I have been following him on facebook.
He is really a fantastic luthier and no words can describe his playing. I think perhaps in the top 5 oudist alive.

How was the shipping done from Syria during these trying times?

Come on !

SamirCanada - 11-18-2013 at 01:41 PM

3anjad khaye, he plays with lots of feeling. Ok maybe top 10 ;)
I am curious to see who would be the top 5 oud players alive that you enjoy listening to most.

Maybe we should do a thread where everyone shares their top 5 oud players still alive. Perhaps i havent heard about some of your favorites.

suz_i_dil - 11-19-2013 at 01:33 AM

I meet Samir opinion, Huseyn has a lot of feeling in his interpetations. This talk in his improvisations.

Your idea to talk about the oud players we enjoy is nice, a good occasion to hear players we don't know yet.
I wouldn't make a " top " list, each having his own personnality. But here is a few names I enjoy a lot listening too.

Ahmad el Kahtib
Mustafa Said
Necati Celik
Bayram Coskuner
Mehmet Bitmez
Youssif Abbas

BTW, does the record give a good idea of the sonority of the oud? This is a direct recording with a zoom H4. I didn't follow imrpovement in home recording field. Maybe you will have some advices which doesn't need the invest of the price of a car for a mic and preamp.

Best

Alfaraby - 11-19-2013 at 09:21 AM

No offense to anybody, especially not to Samir or to Husain Sabsaby, whom I met for a week stay in Amman, and respect very much.
I don't like to sound fanatic or sectarian, but I can think of some Palestinian virtuosos: Simon, Taiseer, Kameel, Ahmad, Nizar, Adel, Jubran (2-3) etc. before we get to mention the great players of Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Gulf countries, Yemen, and so on.
To be named among the top 5 in the world, one should be mighty Samson
:)
Therefore I wondered !

On the other hand I don't believe in competition in music. Every player, as modest as his playing might be, has his own feelings and language that others don't. Music is made to be played together, not to be a rivalry issue.

Thank you Samir

Yours indeed
Alfaraby

I agree with this, and in that same spirit a player might make you go wild with his playing and not do much for me and viseversa.

In no particular order my favorite players these days are:
Simon Shaheen
Charbel Rouhana
Abood Khawaja
Nazeeh Aborrish
Yildiran Guz

Luttgutt - 11-20-2013 at 03:07 AM

Hi!

I don't understand you Alfarabi.
First you get  because Hussain Sabsaby was one of Samircanad 's top players..
And then you make a list of your favarits from Palastine (and I cannot see why you think some of them are better then Sabsaby!)..
And then you say that you don't like competition in music...

What do you really want to say?

Anyway.. my top players AS FOR NOW are:

Anouar brahem
Mohammad abou Zikri
Ahmad alkhatib
Charbel Rouhana
And (always) Jamil Bashir

This is classic Alfaraby: expresses a strong opinion on something and then backpedals furiously as soon as someone challenges it. Come on Al, have the courage to stand by your convictions! It's ok to have a strong opinion - in fact the forum is all the richer for it.

Hello Samir
I realize i forgot to answer your question.
The oud was shipped from Damascus airport with a transporter named skynet. Then flyed to Dubaï and changed for TNT transporter. There was a tracking number.
Was delivered at my door (France) after 9 days

Mehran - 11-20-2013 at 03:05 PM

Favourites of the moment:

Ahmad Al-Khatib
Munir Bashir
Yordal Tokcan
Anouar Brahem
Mohammad Abu Zekri

I hate this but I must.

Luttgutt:
What is that you didn't manage to understand ?
Where have you read that my listed players are better than anyone else.
Samir was "curious to see who would be the top 5 oud players alive that you enjoy listening to most";
So I mentioned only some of whom I like and enjoy most.
I didn't say they are the best. I didn't say they're better than whosever. You're putting words I didn't write in my post. So please ...
Second, can't one simply shrug when reading something he does not totally agree with ? I wonder ! Why should I be silenced ?

David:
:(
I feel offended, though I didn't commit the slightest misdemeanor !
It seems, once more, that war needs only one party. It does not even have to be "justified".
You didn't read my post at all. Therefore this wasn't a right thing to say. Was this real life, I'd call it slander and libel, act accordingly & won't use "backpedals ". I do believe in what I say and know how to express it and stand for. Thank you for the advice. Nevertheless, I respect others' point of view and don't offend people with no reason, like you've done. If my opinion hearts anyone, I'd prefer to withdraw from the whole forum, rather than call others names, like some very respectful fellow members have done here in the past !
In real life, I fight all the day long, so I don't need another ring & don't drag me to what I'm not here for. The most to be injured at last is the artist under the discussion, whom I tried my best to spare.

From now on I shall be much careful and not express any prefferences of mine, not even a

I feel very sorry for all this and won't come back to this thread anymore.

What a pity

Yours indeed
Alfaraby

Bravo Marouan, belle acquisition!
Tout compris le prix?

Not intending to take sides, but I would prefer that you keep sharing your preferences and colorful biases, Alfaraby. Makes the forum more dynamic.

But on to the other topic in this thread. Among the many oudists I enjoy listening to, a few of the lesser mentioned ones are:

Negar Bouban
Ziad Rajab
Hosam Eliwat
Mohsin Mohamed
امال احمد مينا (I can't read Arabic, but I found her on facebook, of all places)

hamed - 11-20-2013 at 06:53 PM

this is a great topic.
My top 5 (still living)

1. Simon Shaheen
2. Marcel Khalife
3. Said Chraibi
4. Nasser Houari
5. Tarek al Jundi

epokhe - 11-21-2013 at 12:37 AM

My top five, for now:

- Nasser Houari
- Said Chraibi
- Ahmad al-Khatib
- Issa Boulos
- Simon Shaheen

P.S. I think the name that Jack listed in Arabic script would be transliterated as "Amal Ahmad Mina," though I'm not familiar with this player myself and couldn't find any info since I don't have a Facebook account. Can you offer us any audio or video clips of her playing, Jack?

suz_i_dil - 11-21-2013 at 10:07 AM

Merci Francis !
Oui tout inclus. Je tâcherais d en faire aussi une video pour compléter.

I have only found her on facebook. Perhaps it's time for you to succumb to the inevitable. Here's one of her videos:

Thanks, Jack! Some really enjoyable playing there. I'm almost inspired to join Facebook. Almost. :)

David Parfitt - 11-21-2013 at 12:20 PM

Thanks Jack. I remember watching part of one of her videos before, a Bayati taqsim, and it sounded like a note for note rendition of a Munir Bashir taqsim. I'm not saying all of her stuff is, but thought it was worth flagging up to perhaps generate further discussion? She is certainly a very accomplished player though!

David

P.S. Has anyone else's screen turned the colour of diarrhoea?

VERY DARK SCREEN COLORS HARD TO READ

Mine has. Alternating dark and light. The light is hard to read. The dark is very very hard to read.

Hehe! Thanks for the feedback David! :)

Lemme know if you guys like this a little better?

Jody Stecher - 11-21-2013 at 02:18 PM

The words in the dark colored little boxes (like "new reply") are hard to read. The lighter background colors make my eyes hurt but at least I can read what is written. I can't say I like it though. Maybe this should be a new topic?

Jody Stecher - 11-21-2013 at 03:56 PM

Thanks, Mike. Now it's good!

Hello,

some asked me a video of this oud, to get another kind of recording of the sound.

Very nice sound Marouan.
And also very nice playing. Félicitations !
And, well... you have so long fingers ;)
I don't know the piece you are playing. Nice one too.

Robert

suz_i_dil - 12-8-2013 at 04:58 AM

thank you Robert !
sorry I didn't answered your last email. I enjoyed listening to your recording of the nihavend semai, very sensitive playing.
stay well
