Sharing Song Sheet - "Manousaki" by Vassilis Staurakakis

John Erlich - 1-16-2014 at 12:08 PM

Hi All,

I finally got a chance to write out a simple, but beautiful Greek/Cretan song: "Manousaki" by Vassilis Staurakakis. This is from his recording, "Sto Dini Tou Anemo," with his brother and Ross Daly.

Hear here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKAPAEfQKiE

Enjoy,
"Udi" John

Very nice song. Thanks for the sheet, John.
It will be a real pleasure to play it on the oud or the laouto.

I would like to find other pieces from Crete, instrumental or songs. I'd be happy if someone here on this forum could give me some links!

I don't know about other music sheets of Cretan music, but this CD by the Stavrakakis Bros. & Ross Daly is the best recording of Greek music I've ever heard: http://www.studio52.gr/info_en.asp?infoID=00000hog

I can't recommend Studio 52 any more. Their customer service has taken a HUGE dive lately.

All the best,
John

I got the cd now from studio52 in Thessaloniki, it took some time but it worked in the end. Then I found out afterward that the cd is available for download in iTunes store, of course much cheaper...
Anyway, it's indeed a very beautiful cd if you like greek music, I like it a lot! Thanks to John Erlich for the tip.:wavey:

Hi Alexander,

Glad to hear Studio52 came through for you! Both Studio52 and IsraelMusic.com owe me CDs I think I'll probably never receive; and Rashid Sales is taking a long time with my recent order, too! Tulumba.com is the only on-line CD seller who has never given me cause to complain. Fassiphone.com in Belgium has the worst customer service I've ever experienced--I have recalled my tale of frustration previously in the Forums--which is sad, because North African music is the hardest Arab/Muslim world music to find in my area (N. California, USA).

My favorite Turkish folk music recording--and a great "companion" recording to the Stavrakakis/Daly one--is "Gülün Kokusu Vardı": http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HKJ37K/ref=dm_ws_ps_cdp?ie=UTF... It is available thru Amazon.com, both as CD and MP3 download. I personally like the CDs: I think the sound quality is better.

Peace out,
"Udi" John

Francis,

These three, Spiros & Chrisoula Sifogyarakis, and Markos Markogyanakis (Lauto) have been recording fine Cretan music for years. Lyrical songs, and dance music, flawless playing and bell-clear singing.

(The fourth pic on this link is their album I got years ago. A very fine early LP and worth finding)

There seems to be enough of their music on youtube to build a collection.

Thanks a lot Stephen!
I didn't know these guys, their music is really nice!
Do you know about a book for cretan laouto, with tunes sheet? I don't need a tutorial, but a written way to memorise tunes.

Thanks again

Francis

Francis,

You might try one or both of these (scroll down). They are both listed as being in Greek language.
