Masel - 1-23-2014 at 03:54 AM

hello, i've been exploring (with help and inspiration from great teachers and friends) the composed taqsim. i tried to let Sound, harmony and overtones be the center in this composition, and secondly melody. i hope you like it i would love to hear comments.

tislam fadel, sorry you felt it is too long. i think its ok, depending what you expect and what you like. in azeri/persian music 10 minutes is normal for a taqsim, indian raag can be an hour, its all perspective.
thank you my friend

This is a lovely Taqsim Masel, rich in colour and tone. The harmony can be heard clearly connecting some beautiful lines. I accept Fadel's comment about the length of the Taqsim, he makes a fair point, but the listener can always choose how much attention and time he gives to any piece of music. Indeed it's all perspective. Nice playing and music, thank you.

of course charlie i sometimes prefer short pieces too, in this case i tried to use less melodic movement and modulations and focus on harmony because i felt it can give a feeling of timelessness.

the whole idea of a maqam is full of this timelessness i feel, because you learn to embelish and morph the notes so that you can express one thought or feeling (or maqam or color) in an infinitely changing way. or at least you try :)

either way i respect your comments thank you

That is very true Masel and in this piece these feelings can be heard. Timelessness is a beautiful concept. Whilst I understand Fadel's comment on the length of the piece, I personally do not think it is too long, I enjoyed listening to it from beginning to end. I forgot to say this.

Nice playing. For me, 9 mins. is rather long for a taqsim, but it depends on how much attention i'm paying and how much it varies in feel, modulations, etc. Thanks for posting it,
