I have this turkish string set that says "Masterwork ud strings" and only has the caliber of the strings; it doesn't say the tuning or scale lenght
for which they are.
The caliber for the strings according to the packare are:
0.60 mm
0.70 mm
0.65 mm
0.78 mm
0.90 mm
1.05 mm
Can anybody please tell me for what tuning and scale lenght they are?
Thank you so much!rojaros - 2-3-2014 at 02:05 PM
Our Member Matthias Wagner should know, he has a lot of experience with strings and tensions.
You could also google Arto's String calculator and find out which tunigs make sense if you don't want to exceede let's say 3,5 kg tension per string
(maybe even less, depending on your oud). I'd suspect it's meant for turkish standard tuning, being from top down: d', a, e, B, F#, C# (just perfect
fourths from d down to C#)...Brian Prunka - 2-3-2014 at 02:57 PM
That seems like a peculiar set to me. I agree that it seems like it's for d' a e B for the first 4 courses. The 5th course seems consistent with F#,
but the lowest course seems too light for C#. luan - 2-3-2014 at 03:04 PM
Thanks guys!!
I will check the calculator

I should mention that the string calcuator works only for plain material strings (like plain nylon or nylegut or fluorocarbon) if you know the
density.
For wound string you can calculate something like the 'mean density' if you know the tension for a certain scale length and pitch, and then use it to
at least estimate how the same string would do with different scale lengths and pitches...
With wound strings it is so difficukt to say anything about them, because each manufacturer uses different core materials and different wires for the
winding, and also diffrent winding techniques (some are tighter - stiffer string, some more loosely wound - more flexible string). So the nominal
gauge of a wound string doesn't tell you much, unless you know the string or measure the tension experimentally.
In one of my early posts here in the forum I have described a very simple device to measure the real string tension (at least to some degree of
accuracy) I came up with.
Only the first two strings seems to me to be plain:
0,6 mm --> d / 34 Newton at scale of 58,5 cm and material = Nylon
0,7 mm --> a / 35 Newton at scale of 58,5 cm and material = Nylon
If the material is Carbon/PVF the tension will be higher. You have informations about the material of the plain strings?
About the remaining strings cannot be said anything as wound strings cannot be measured in thickness and then having infos about the tension.
But if the above given tensions are the same for the wound strings the set will be good for a turkish oud with the tuning dd, aa, ee, BB, AA, E I
suppose.
