First Video - Tanbur

RobMacKillop - 2-13-2014 at 04:36 AM

I'm beginning a study of the Turkish tanbur, and have a dedicated page for it on my website:http://robmackillop.net/tanbur/

Here's a video introducing the instrument, including a performance (too grand a term!) of one of the studies, the tuneful Calisma 30 from the Tanbur Metodu by Emin Akan.

All advice gratefully received!

Thanks. It's just a start. But we all have to start somewhere...

Hi Rob,
I like the video and your playing, thanks for sharing! And your instrument has a nice sound, too. And stick to it, I'd like to hear your playing in a year or so... ;)

I hope I do stick with it. I bought a tanbur a couple of years ago, but that only lasted a month. I had no idea what to do with it. This time I have a much better idea, for some reason. I can see what I have to do, which is not the same as knowing how to do it, but can see a path, whereas before I saw a brick wall. So the signs are hopeful.

I've also met an oud player in my town to play with, and that makes a big difference.

One problem is that it is very hard to sight-read music when the notes are all laid out along one long pair of strings. I have to keep looking at the frets to check where I am. I'm therefore choosing a study, then memorising it. Hopefully I'll get better at sight reading, as I don't want to memorise EVERYTHING...
