Tuning problems

godzilla234 - 2-26-2014 at 07:19 AM

Hello, I have been having problems tuning my oud since day one. At first, I thought it was just the strings. But as time progressed and all new strings were added, I dont think strings were the problem. As I tune my oud other pegs pop out from the tensionand or change tuning. Is this normal? Is it in the wrong tune? ( CFADGC) I have a syrian make oud, and when it arrived, it was in the tuning XFADGC (X= No string). Any help? Is it the humidity? just normal? please help.

Sounds like humidity problems. Try pushing the pegs all the way in. Dr. Oud had some advise on a prior thread to use peg compound typically used for violin. Use it sparingly on the contact points. Make sure the humidity stays 35%-45%. More humidity will make the pegs lock and you cannot turn them.

Order the strings in the pegbox so none cross over the others. Keep the wound strings away from both walls of the pegbox. follow hussamd's advice to push the peg in as you turn it. Use some peg compound to prevent sticking and slipping.

I have been pushing the strings in every time I tune. The problem is that tuning one peg causes the others to pop out. I am begging to look into humidity solutions such as a hard case and a case dehumidifier

Hi Godzilla:D:wavey:

can you post a pic of the pegbox?
Sounds like there are cracks in the pegbox.
