Back in 2008 my wife went to Egypt and brought back a beautiful O
ud. I have never played the instrument as I've been unable to figure out how to keep it in tune. It also needs new strings, I think. Any advice
on who I could take it to to get it restrung as well as a lesson on how to tune it and keep it in tune? I'm also interested in taking lessons. I
live in North Vancouver, BC and play in the family entertainment group, Gogo Bonkers. I think Oud would be a rad instrument to add to our repertoire.
Any advice? Thoughts? Opinions?

Google is your friend. You can find all the information you want there. I did! Get a clip on tuner and attach to tip of the pegbox. There are many
tunings you can use but for your Egyptian oud probably DGADgc or CFADgc. This forum has a lot of good information. You can get strings from
oudstrings.com for the tuning you decide to go with.

There are a couple of oud players in Vancouver you could study with. Gord Grdina is one. I think our forum member Navid is also there.

I suggest getting together with an experienced oud player. Persian oud/barbat player Hossein Behroozinia could probably take a look at you instrument
and make some suggestions: http://www.behroozinia.com/ (According to his web page, he lives in North Vancouver, BC.) I don't know the quality of the instrument. It may also
be an issue withe the peg, peg holes, or, possibly, the nut. If it's not the strings but "working" parts of the instrument, you may need to talk to a
luthier (try Dr. Oud, AKA Richard Hankey: http://www.droud.com/ ) to see if something can be done to improve the situation. Slipping pegs are very common among cheaper ouds...

Navid here. Great to hear you're getting into the Oud. Hossein Behroozinia can definitely help you out with the tuning issues on the Oud. Since you
live in North Van, you should drop by his Art Centre, it's called Nava Arts Centre. It's right beside the Long and Mcquade on Main St, North
Vancouver.
