I don't know what "fashion" has to do with it. The usual term for these are "fluted" ribs.
I think most luthiers don't build them because it is extra work and doesn't confer any benefit other than visual style and possibly being slightly
easier to hold.
I would say there's no reason not to get one if it appeals to you, and if it doesn't appeal to you then don't get one . . . I doubt it has any
meaningful effect on the sound.
