wittner pegs

hans - 7-15-2014 at 01:43 PM

Hi all! I'm getting a new oud soon, in fact i'm going to pick one up in istanbul coming tuesday, and it will be either a turunz or a calay. I want to put wittner pegs into it. Some time ago there was a discussion on the forum about wittner pegs and the consensus seemed to be that you should get viola pegs. My teacher however has an 8 course oud with a rather wide peg box. He has mostly viola pegs at the wider part, but five violin pegs at the top. He showed me one extra violin peg he has and says that the violin pegs should be big enough on a standard six course oud. It looked convincing. Does anyone know why everyone seemed to think you need viola pegs? The violin versions are much cheaper. Many thanks for any response!

Hello,

it is not a matter how big they are, they must be long enough. So see here for the sizes:

Hi Hans,

I had one reduced price point oud from Faruk Türünz, and now two customs also from him.
I can tell you definitely don't need to change the pegs.
They are super smooth. very easy to tune, the work is incredibly perfect.
If you want to improve the easiness of tuning, put a little graphite under the wounded string on the nut and on the part of the string witch is going to be in contact with the nut after full tension.

The last advice would be valuable with any kind of pegs, anyway.

Have a nice trip to Istanbul.

Hey! Thanks for the quick responses! Matthias, the violin pegs seemed long enough all over the peg box, so the viola pegs seem unnecessary. But many thanks for info.
Franck, i did hear that before about turunz's pegs, so i'll try them first. But everyone seems to find wittner pegs heavenly

I'll second Franck's point about not needing to change the pegs on a Türünz oud. I have a reduced price and a custom oud from him, and the pegs are PERFECT. I also have a cheap oud I bought in Istanbul, and the pegs are horrible...always slipping, impossible to keep tuned, etc. So I do have something to compare them with.

Okay! Interesting, i'll not order anything before i have tried the oud extensively (except pyramid pvf lute strings)

See my post http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=14879

I have the perfection pegs now on my both ouds, Copcuoglu and Stenzel. They are marvelous, look great, have real ebony knobs, hold the tuning and are not overgeared (ration 1:4 is totally sufficient; we were tuning 1:1 before after all !). I wouldn't want to have plastic knobs on my oud (wood). And they are cheaper than Wittner.

Hi,

you need to be sure of the pegs that used in the oud ... I had wittner viola pegs they are perfect when I used them at one of my ouds .. but when I used for another oud they where very thin and did not fit for it.

so you need to know the original pegs size first.

The Wittner viola pegs are available in two sizes.
8,6 & 9,2 mm
