your favourite youtube taqsim?

Jaffa Road - 9-18-2014 at 05:34 PM

Hi

I want to hear and watch at least one really good taqsim each day.

please share here a taqsim that you heard on youtube and really like. One that you have comeback to (watch/study/listen to) multiple times and consider special for some reason.

I'll start with this one by my friend and sometimes teacher Yair Dalal. No flashy technique, on display here but there is some thing about the way this taqsim vibes that really gets me every time.

Is that Forum member Marina on stage with the oud, behind Yair and to his right?

I am always impressed by anything Simon Shaheen does--in traditional style--e.g., https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxg1In_bXFo&index=5&list=RDx... (view could be a little closer)

This Farid El Atrash taqsim in the presence of Abdel Wahab is priceless and goes beyond most of the stuff in his published concerts. I always learn something new whenever I listen to it whether in terms of technique or phrasing.

When i think taqsim my mind goes to Munir Bashir
For his mastering of the maqam, because from the very first note to the very last silence he knows where we want to bring us
And in any of his modulations you will feel tjhe mood of the maqam, without an hesitation from him

Listen :)

I don't often go back to taqsim that I've seen on youtube. But when I do, I always go back to this one. However, I think this taqsim is more composed than improvised.

Thanks these are great keep them coming.

That al Johar one is rather interesting, to me it is more like a Paganini caprice than a taqsim, still great to see and hear it though.

I'm cheating a bit, but here goes. Whoever played this violin Rast taqsim
in Saleh Abdel Hay radio recordings.

A bit more cheating. Abraham Salman qanun Rast taqsim.

Ok, no more cheating. This is my favorite oud taqsim by Simone Shaheen:

That is so beautiful and flowing. Is he any relation to Motlu Torun?

Jody Stecher - 9-23-2014 at 09:17 PM

Now it is my favorite as well.

In case no one else has mentioned this yet, if you go to Soundcloud and search "taqsim" there's a lot of music posted there.
