When I was studying the cello I focused primarily on playing the Bach suites daily. They are immense for building technique and understanding of
linear harmony. I'm sorry I digress. Are there works for oud that are like this? Pieces that are played to help develop technique?

Hi,
Targan's etudes are the most challenging technical pieces available for oud as far as I know.
Some longas are very challenging when played fast and with loads of ornaments, and there are also the more complicated interpretations of classical
repertoire from players like Bacanos and others.
In all cases I would recommend using scores and recordings together.
If you would like to work on technique I would be happy to help you in person or via Skype.
Take care,
mav

Mav, I'm going to take you up on that. Will have my new oud soon too!

Great decision Don. I've been taking Skype classes with Mav for about a year, and it has been fantastic. I wouldn't be even close to where I am now
without his lessons and guidance. He's an awesome player and an equally great teacher.
