Tortoise shell

Omar Al-Mufti - 2-22-2015 at 06:27 AM

Hi,
I would highly appreciate it if anyone could tell me where to buy real tortoise shell sheets from. I live in Austria and would be great if there are any online shops in Europe.
Cheers,
Omar

The reason you are having trouble finding online shops is that selling or trading tortoiseshell is illegal internationally, due to the CITES treaty and various other laws. Some countries (like Turkey) allow it within the country, but I am certain that it is illegal for them to send it to you in Austria.

Thanks Brian. A friend of mine drew my attention to that point. Seeing all those turkish ouds with turtoise made me assume it is OK to buy it

any suggestion for wood veneer types that simulate the same range of colors of tortoise. I don't like celluloid by the way.

I don't know much about wood or wood veneer, but couldn't you use real wood? The pick guard on my Türünz oud (picture attached) was made from the same type of one of the woods used on the bowl...santos. It looks pretty cool in terms of the color/pattern variation, and I think many woods have similar properties. The second photo on Faruk Türünz's web page (http://www.oudmaster.com/fully-ornate.php) in the "wood and mother of pearl" category also looks extremely varied, almost something like tortoise shell...to me at least.

Thanks David!,
the one in Turuenz page looks cool. I need to know what kind of wood he used.

that's what I meant......real wood type.....colorful type

I emailed Faruk, and will let you know if he responds. Here's a picture of the pick guard below...in case anyone else might have an idea. It's listed as "wood and mother of pearl" on the website. I realize it is the inlay that is mother of pearl, but I'm unsure what the wood is.

many thanks David!
I appreciate it

I've already told Omar, but in case anyone else is interested, the wood is "Pommele Sapele". A guy I know who used to work at Faruk's shop told me, but I still haven't heard from Faruk regarding if it's possible to purchase a pick guard separately from him.

Here is information about Sapele and the figured quarter sawn 'Pommele Sapele' for information. It is the same species as 'Utile', a substitute for Mahogany that I have used in the past for instruments.
Sapele is now a wood on the 'at risk' list of species. Available as a veneer.
