Hello
the French national library released a 18 CD set compiling the records for the Cairo arabic music congress of 1932.
Just keep in mind some consider it as a disaster toward the way of transmission of Arabic music. Being in a way too westernized in its methodology,
for exemple aiming at standardizing intonations. I wont go into details, not mastering the subject.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing. No price listed, but it looks expensive!
Considering that the recordings would be representations of the music prior to the standards the arose from the congress itself, it should please
those who consider the congress to be a 'disaster'—the recordings preserve the pre-congress sounds from a variety of regions.suz_i_dil - 5-27-2015 at 04:53 AM
Hello Brian
I've seen on other websites 200 euros for the set.
The fact is that some main players of their time were not represented at all. Because of something around the standard and regularity in the
interpretations. As far as I remember for exemple al Qasqbgy was not invited. Can someone confirm that ? Too much feeling and not enough academic in
the sense the congress wished ? I miss to much details to develop.
This remind me of French painting exhibits in which some considered as major nowadays we're at that time unconsidered and mocked
But anyway a great resource for old school recordings and standards. ameer - 5-28-2015 at 10:27 AM

these recordings are available, not widely spread but available on tapes recorded from the original 78 vinyls.
i have some of them somewhere, the old version is rights-free i think, but of course not the new remasters by la BNF.
They are important for reference but not necessarily for their artistic value, like the whole 1932 congress. Luttgutt - 5-31-2015 at 11:58 AM
I have 11 of them..
Some are simply amazing.
The only problem is that the recording Companies put a time restriction on the musicians (around 3 minutes per song).
Actually, one of Um Kulhoum big achievement is that she gave back the LONG arabic song a strong Place on the scene..Jono Oud N.Z - 3-22-2017 at 10:46 PM
OMFG! Thanks for sharing, Jono!Jono Oud N.Z - 3-24-2017 at 02:09 PM
.
Surely this deserves to be widespread among people passionate about this music rather than gathering dust somewhere out of reach of most.suz_i_dil - 3-26-2017 at 08:18 AM
