Pyramid oud strings sets

Omar Al-Mufti - 1-15-2016 at 09:51 AM

Gents,
Please help me with any available info if anyone has experience with Pyramid oud strings sets 650 and 665 on ouds with 58.5 cm strings length , based on C cc arabic tuning.
Any advice on other ready sets that would fit the same oud at the same tuning?
Cheers,
Omar

Personally I like the 650 set on 58.5cm ouds . . . I like the lower tension that results. The stated tension of that set is 3.8Kg at 61.5cm or thereabouts, but I generally prefer around 3.3-3.5kg, so it works out.

I like the 3rd and 6th course of the #665 set but the rest are too heavy IMO.

The OU80A set is actually good in the context but you need to get a low C; .044in LaBella is good.

Thanks Brian,
I should try the OU80A once...I heard good feedback on it.
Regarding the 650......how is it compared to the othe LaBella set, the OU80 in terms of tension on 58.5 ouds?

The treble strings on the OU80 are too light to use with Arabic tuning on 58.5cm. The strings on the 650 are more balanced.

If we compare only the metal strings of the two sets, how would the results be?
I used the OU80 many times after replacing the trebles with heavier ones.......but how would be the tension of the 650 metals wound strings compared to the metal wound string of the OU80?
Thanks again

The metal wound strings of the 650 are slightly lighter than the ones of the OU80. The trebles are noticeably heavier. One notable difference is that LaBella's nylon strings are rectified (slightly opaque) while Pyramid's are plain (clear).

If you are going to the trouble of mixing sets, I would recommend just getting a custom set of LaBella, or a mixed set if you wanted different trebles.
