Hello friends,

the summeracademy is comming closer now. So let me introduce to all the teachers we will have this year.

Mustafa Said, Cairo / Beirut - Aoud beginners group

Mustafa Said is an Egyptian singer, musicologist, composer and a virtuoso Oud player. He has been living in Beirut since 2004. He is one of the few young talents to devote his career to the classical Arabic repertoire while exploring new forms and new sounds. Former professor at the House of Oud (Cairo), he extends his musical approach from the already existent musical traditions of the east Mediterranean region with the spirit of the two previous musical renaissances: that of the golden age of Abbasid music, and that of the second half of the 19th century. Inspired by the oriental traditional heritage, the compositions and forms of interpretation of Mustafa Said offer a very contemporary approach and place great emphasis on the instrumental and vocal improvisation (Taqsim).

Mustafa Said puts his focus in that group on one side on the technic, especially on holding the plectrum, the rischa and furthermore on the way to pluck the strings. Both he thinks are the main principles to get a good contact to the instrument. But also the general holding of the instrument will be practised. Naturally his special traditional and egyptian stile goes into his lessons. He is working in his lesson without notes, only listening and repeating is his method to get a feeling to that instrument and the oriental tunes. This is an important aspect for him. His lessons are an optimal start on the oud. Mustafa will do his lessons for whole group and also in single sessions for every student.

Aoud advanced group with Saif Al-Khayyat

Saif Al-Khayyat was born in 1977 in Baghdad. He studied classical Arab lute from 1992 to 1998 at the Baghdad Conservatory. His teachers included Rawhi Al-Khammash, Salem Abdul Karem and Sami Nasim, among others. During his studies, he concentrated on playing as a soloist with the ‘Amasi Al Sharq’ orchestra and composing songs for church choirs. He left Iraq in 1999 for Germany, where he found a new home and the opportunity to further develop himself musically. Saif Al-Khayyat founded the oriental jazz ensemble ‘Ho-Jazz’ in Leipzig, bringing Arab classical music and jazz together. He has appeared, among other places, at the ‘Lute Festival’ in Dresden, the ‘Quedlinburger Musiksommer’ (Quedlinburg Summer of Music) and the ‘Leipziger Jazznachwuchsfestival’ (Leipzig Jazz Festival for Young Talent).

In 2014 he released togather with Nora Thiele the wondeful CD "Ahlam Babiliyya".

Hello,

beside the two aoud lesson-groups ( beginners and advanced ) we will have 4 concerts where the aoud is involved:
Tue 30.8.2016, Augustinunm Freiburg

Ahlan Babiliyya - Saif Al-Khayyat, Aoud & Nora Thiele, Percussion

The moment itself, a musical meditation, the art of improvisation is what stands at the heart of this project. Collected on this CD are traditional Iraqi maqam melodies, compositions of Classical masters, and original pieces. On the one hand, the aim of this recording is to preserve Iraqi traditional music, and, on the other, to simultaneously make audible a gentle renewal and further development. Maqam is a musical style that is fundamental to Middle Eastern music and an umbrella term for this music?s tone scales. The task of the interpreter of the maqam is to give exceptional expression to a maqam?s emotional impact and to move the audience with his or her empathy and virtuosity.

Saif Al-Khayyat & Nora Thiele met in Leipzig in 2002, which marked the beginning of an intense musical collaboration and friendship. This musical duo manage to bring together tradition and innovation in a breathtaking manner, impressing with their virtuosic collaboration and creating an intimate and mesmerising concert atmosphere with their artful playing. Like a stream flowing into boundlessness, the rhythm of the drum carries with it the oud's signs, laments and wildly grating cries of ecstasy.
