Kervan

PaulS - 4-21-2016 at 12:36 AM

Munir Nurettin Bekken, has a song on his album, The Art of Turkish Ud, entitled Kervan. It is very lyrical and non-Turkish to my ear. Does anyone know if that is the name of a song or to what it might refer?

Why not just ask him? He's a really nice guy and I'm sure would be happy to tell you.

Here's what the CD liner notes say:

"From Eskisehir in Northwest Anatolia, this piece is traditionally performed on solo baglama. The single-note melody interspersed with drone playing style is uncharacteristic of Turkish baglama and is peculiar to this piece."

the Turkish word Kervan seems to be cognate with "caravan" and seems to have the same meaning, a procession or sequence.

It sounds Persian to me.

Thank you Jody! I only have the iTunes version so no liner notes!

I think I found a score of the song, which is titled "Kervan" on the sheet. And, yes, part of what keeps me engaged in this music is mulling over the similarities and differences among Near Eastern and North African cultures.

There is so much Turkish sheet music available on-line, it never hurts to try Google searching the name of the song with the Turkish word for a music score, "notları."

Peace out,
"Udi" John

This has been an education! Thanks everyone. Any comments on the musicality?

I just posted a re-written score of "Kervan" to my "Turkish Music for Non-Turks" Facebook page. I transposed the music from F to D, to make it easier for us Arabic-style oud players (using open D, 3rd string). I am posting a PDF here.
I think the song sounds like an etude.

Peace out,
"Udi" John
