This oud belonged to my great -grandfather who was a musician in Turkey. He left Turkey in 1918 and immigrated to Greece where he worked as a
professional musician.
The oud dates from 1906 with a serial number 1860 and was made by the brothers Tawfiq and Iskander Qudmany (known in Ottoman as Samli Tevfik and Samli
Iskender Kutmanyzade). They came originally from Damascus, and have migrated to Istanbul at the beginning of the 20th century, where they opened a
business by 1902.
The string length is 58cm. The top, which measures 35cm across at the broadest point, consists of high-quality, very fined grained Caucasus spruce
(Picea orientalis). It is surrounded by a simple strip of walnut wood and has only one soundhole with one rosette made from maple. The ornament is not
very complex but it is very precise, fluently worked. It reveals a high level of handwork, which is sustained through many other details of the
instrument.
The oud was restored in 2004 by Ziad Rajab, the syrian Oud Maker who lives in Greece. It's in a very good condition (9/10) and still possible to play
in concerts.
The fingerboard and the keypegs are not original
