I haven't tried to play any of these songs yet, but here is a link to download a free PDF book of classics and original compositions by Syrian violinist Tawfiq Al-Sabbagh - http://www.alarabimag.com/books/14622-%D9%85%D8%AC%D9%85%D9%88%D8%B...

Here is a short bio: "Tawfiq bin Fath-Allah Al-Sabbagh was a musician and author from Aleppo, Syria. Born Elias, he received his elementary education at the Greek Orthodox School and later went on to work at its church as an Intoner, or someone who sings hymns. He later changed his name to Tawfiq Al-Sabbagh and moved to Cairo. However, he later returned to Damascus where he established a musical school and a club. In Damascus, he began teaching music in schools as well as on the radio station of Aleppo. He has several music tracks, including his most famous one entitled Awatef (Emotions). Al-Sabbagh also published several books, including Ta’lim Al-Fonoun (Teaching Arts) and Majmo’at Kita’ Mosiqiya Sharqiya (A collection of Eastern Music Tracks), the latter of which holds all his composed tracks as well as tracks of other Arab and Turkish composers. His publications also include Al-Angham Al-Shaqiya (Eastern Melodies), Ta’lim Al-Oud (Oud ”Lute” Education) and Al-Dalil Al-Mosiqi Al-Aam fi Itrab Al-Angham (The General Musical Guide in Rapt of Melodies)." Awesome, thank you John! :)

There are heaps of compositions in the book (!).

I first heard of this composer through the recordings of Al Kindi Ensemble.
He has composed some classic pieces.

If anyone can help translate the titles of the pieces that would be amazing:cool:.

I just remembered that some gentleman once sent me an English-language table of contents for an Arabic music book...turns out to be THIS ONE!

I would like to access the book but the link to the book leads to an alarabimag page with lots of book titles in Arabic. Is it the book with the coffee cup on the cover?

Jody, click on the blue button marked 'Download' on the right side of the screen. I just tried it and it works.

Thanks, al-Halabi and thanks John for calling attention to this book. The download worked. A warning to others who try: after staying on the download page for a few seconds another window which pretends to be an update site for Adobe Flash tries to open It very clearly is not what it claims to be. And my virus protection caught it and prevented access. Click on the blue button quick on the first pages and get out quick!
