Hi folks!
Here is a simple question : oud players are for or against playing with 6 oud strings ? Maybe they don't care ?!
I guess everyone here is used to playing 11 (or 12 ok!) strings. But for what reason? Feeling ? Sound ? Habits ?...
I play acoustic and electric oud and sincerely, I suppose a 6 strings wouldn't change anything... except the strings set price !
So, 6 or 11? Thanks for letting me know.... and why

The double strings (on each course) will create vibration which results in more “bassy” sound, but when single, they sound more like guitar! Two
different sounds ..

I recorded this video with my smartphone and two sylent oud model made with same electro amp, same reverb, same equalisation ...Same conditions ! A 6
strings on left and a 11 strings on right.

You can hear only the 6 strings during my short improvisation from 1:10 ...
From my point of view, a 6 strings is easier to play and the sound is very very very close ! Sensation are bit different for left hand but not at all
disturbing. Up and down pick sound become more balanced.

I think the two sounds are more like each other than either one is like an acoustic oud. But I do hear a sonic difference between single and double
course. Single sounds a bit "empty".

Hi Sylvain,
The use of double strings create a natural "flanger" even if the two strings of a course are perfectly tuned.
I think there are two different thinks that change the sound.
First, the two strings are not hit exactly at the same time, there is a little delay. Even if very short, but it exists.
Second, when you put your fingertip on the fretboard, the two strings don't have exactly the same length. The fingertip is rounded, not like a fret of
a guitar for example.
That's what create the typical sound of the oud.

I am agree that double string create a flange sound that we can not hear on simple string model.
Somewhere i think this experience could become something-else than a basic electrical oud, or a oud to practice makam ...

Yes! I agree that the single strung instrument could become not a bad oud but a good Something Else. I didn't dislike the sound. In fact that
"emptyness" created a kind of inner longing. I remembered the sound all day. It could definitely be used for maqam music. And for anything else as
well.

@ Sylvain - Sincerely, I don't dislike the sound of the oud with single string.
But on the other hand, I really love the sound of the oud with double strings

About making, I think it is interesting thing because 6 strings permit to use many tools developped for guitar ... tuner, small keys, piezo ...
Maybe the begining of another branch of oud family
