Jonathan Gemmill - Early Ottoman Music Thesis

Jono Oud N.Z - 7-18-2018 at 02:04 PM

I finally decided that I would share my thesis with everyone at Mike's Ouds.

It took around 4 years to complete and it was a great joy to finally (!) finish it last year.

The opinions expressed in this thesis are not in any way meant to cause offense to any nationality or stylistic tradition (Arab, Persian, Turkish etc.).
I admit that I do have somewhat of an "Arabic style" bias that is somewhat expressed here.
I also love Persian and Turkish classical music but I am particularly drawn to the Arabic style as it is so rich in expression - very passionate and full of tarab.

The conclusions drawn from the study are my own and some may well disagree - that is fine :).

Also my transcriptions and transpositions are in the appendix.
I have made them accessible for free.

The print edition of the early ottoman pieces is not perfect, but is available for those interested.

Wow!
I just took a glance to start really, but I can easily tell that this is an absolute amazing amount of work, not just for your thesis, but for anyone to read to learn SO MUCH valuable information.
I sure hope you received a nice mark for this one! Thanx for sharing.

Thank you for sharing this, Jonathan! You are "Gamil," as always!

Jono Oud N.Z - 7-19-2018 at 12:10 PM

Thank you all! :).
your encouragement is very much appreciated.

I was a little anxious sharing this but am glad I finally took the plunge :).

Thank you Mike and all at Mike's Ouds (!) for being such a crucial resource for someone living at "the ends of the earth" - far removed from the centres of maqam music and culture.

Many thanks also to my oud teacher Atef in Cairo.
I pray he and his family are OK and are safe as they are Coptic.
I have not been able to contact him for ages.

God bless you all.

Hi Jonathan!

I'd love to look at your thesis but the link is down!

Looking forward to it!!:D

Hey and thanks! :)

I will upload it to a cloud site and send soon.

Not sure why the link is down.
I could ring the University if the problem persists.

Hey - thanks! :)

It was amazing going through so many of the actual medieval/16th century books online (various libraries etc.), as they are scanned in their entirety.
