Hello
I am glad to show you my new acoustic instrument ! Here the prototype called "Cümbüş SBD" I work a lot to mix the turkish Cümbüş and the
classic oud in order to make an instrument with many advantages : comfort of playing, balanced instrument, high sustain, adjustable action, nylon set
strings, steel keys for tuning, french wood, foldable and robust to travel ... In my opinion, a perfectly adapted instrument for oud players
Please use headphones to listen the high natural sustain

That sounds really really beautiful Sylvain!
I am always amazed at what you are accomplishing.
I don't know much about the cumbus yet, but I really like this!
Is the white soundboard made of skin, like a banjo?
Great stuff!

Thanks a lot Mattoud,
That is a natural skin. I tried a plastic model but balance is different. Natural = hot bass, nice balance, long sustain. Plastic = high treble, hard
medium, very long sustain !
Me too I appreciate the sound a lot. Also I feel it more ergonomic than traditionnal oud. Body is a bit low deep than oud ...
Soon price and features on my website sbd-projets.com

I have two cümbüşes, one with a natural skin. It sounds great but its tuning is horribly unstable when temperature or humidity change. Does
oiling the skin help? Do you take any precautions about this?
sylvainbd - 9-22-2019 at 01:25 AM
Hello jack
I didn t take precaution for skin because I don't have this problem of tuning. Do you try to change for another skin ?
Other thing Keys on my instrument are very different than classical cumbus keys. I have another cumbus with olastic skin and the tuning is difficult
and change a lot because keys are cheap and bad.
Maybe you could put better quality here.
Thanks for your feedback

I had the instrument refurbished by a really expert banjo technician, probably the best in Scotland, and he got it sounding so good I'm unwilling to
mess about with it - he's dead now. It's definitely the skin that's the problem, my plastic-headed one is dead stable. If the temperature and
humidity don't change, the skin one is stable too.

I think I missed this thread when you first posted this. This is awesome. I would love an instrument like this. Changing my cumbus's strings from
metal to nylon was the best thing. Sounds like a rubab. And yes, this is an instrument you can travel with. I went backpacking with my cumbus for 7
months. It sounds great. The reason I stopped playing cumbus was because it was annoying to hold.
Are you working with a cumbus builder to make these or are you buying existing cumbus and modifying them? Or did you make it from scratch? Maybe you
answer these questions in your blog post, I'll check it out.

Hello Navid. Thank you for your comment
I bought the body and made neck, bridge, tailspiece, and bows my self. Furthermore the head is a special compact designed that i drawn on CAD
software. Hard to make it !
Currently I am making wood bows for another version. Maybe tonight I ll share it if it is finished.
Indeed it is very easy to travel with I found a gigbag perfectly adapted for this model. I will share picture to show it.
From my point of view that is a good news for oud players because if you play oud you can play easily with the cumbus sbd.
I try to upgrade it step by step depending comment and idea. If you have others you re welcome !
Best regards
