buying a Turkish oud

Hi all,

I live in Istanbul and would like to buy an oud. I would like to buy a Turkish oud that is a decent instrument and not just a low quality or touristy piece.
I already play saz and guitar and would like to learn the oud to a reasonable level.

Please can anyone recommend a shop/maker or brand in Istanbul, I know Faruk Turunz is an excellent maker, but as an English teacher in Istanbul I am earning about $1000 per month. Is it really not worth buying anything cheaper, or should I save up for a reduced Turunz oud, or can a cheaper brand be quite good?

Any advice would be gratefully received

Cheers

I have a Faruk Turunz Arabic custom single. I have had it four about 4 years now. It is absolutely Amazing! I’ve also heard good things about his reduced priced Ouds. If possible I would definitely recommend getting an Oud from Faruk Turunz. It may cost more but in my opinion it’s worth every penny.

There are other excellent oud makers in Istanbul. Check Mustafa Copcuoglu, Hatef Shaterian, Ramazan Calay, at rather fare prices.

Beside the above listed oud makers there is also Salih Bilgi an oud maker from the younger generation. You can check his instruments on his instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/salihbilgiouds/
