I'm a novice to the oud - I purchased one in the Middle East a few years ago but I have no idea where to start when it comes to learning to play. I
have fairly good ear but just can't get used to having no frets (I'm a guitarist!)
Any advice on where to start? Books? Website? Lessons?

Hi Chehoun,
Welcome to the forums. The main part of Mike's site includes some excellent teaching material. Try clicking on any of the Maqamat at http://www.mikeouds.com/video/learn.html and each will take you to some excersizes and examples for that particular maqam.
Whereabouts in Australia are you?

Hi Greg
Thanks for the advice. This website is terrific - it seems to have all the bases covered.
I'm in Sydney, so if anyone out there knows of any good oud teachers (I'd like to learn Arabic taqsim) please do let me know.

Chehoun,
There are several good oud teachers in Sydney. Unfortunately, I don't have contact details.
The world renowned oud player, Joseph Tawadros is based in Sydney and is a member of this list. I would suggest you try to contact him to get some
names and numbers.
Alternately, I have an Egyptian/Australian friend who is taking on some students in Sydney. I will ask him if he can help you.
Please U2U me your email address and I'll let you know the outcome.
