hi sammy,
i cant really tell you an exact way of playing a taqsim, but the way i play it(example bayati), i start on d and play around with the notes(no real order but what ever sounds nice). try playing around with the d, e half-flat,f, and g.when u find something that sounds nice, practice that. then u can move to the g note and play around with the next 4 notes starting with the g. try different rythyms and switching to different notes. doesn't have to be in order( i dont think).then when u've done that u can go back to the d and play saba cos that always sounds nice with bayati.
hope that helps man.:)

hi
i've been listening to many taqsims from the pros. if you listen carefully they hardly play the notes in order. but then again try out diff styles till u find yours.

ahlan sammy
you can try looking at a maqam as two tetracords, as the first step meaning: bayat- bayat on d nahawand on g
then you have two more, ajam tricord on F and ajam an Bb.
try disassembeling the maqam, and then playing around each of the tri/tetracords
for modulation you can use the calssic modulations for start:
saba, ajam, yekah, shuri. this are the basic modulations from bayat .
its very usufull to listen to classic taqasim and to find out how the player developes the maqam, and especialy what mood or feeling you have on every maqam .
i would recommend to listen especialy to riad al sunbati wich i think plays amazing taqasim in the classic fashion

good luck
