Yemeni-born musician, Ahmed Alshaiba, famous for his oud renditions of international hit songs has died in a traffic accident in New York, the musician’s brother confirmed. A self-taught musician, Alshaiba gained widespread fame for his covers of hit songs including Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal,” and the theme songs of shows like “Game of Thrones”. Alshaiba, who was in his early thirties, has performed for the likes of Hillary Clinton and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In addition to his solo arrangements and covers, Alshaiba often collaborated with international artists, created tutorials on how to play the oud and composed original music.

Thats incredibly sad. He just reached 100 million youtube views and released his first album! His video "my trip around the arab world" was a favorite. What a loss for the arabic music world and the oud.

Sad news indeed. Such a talented person he was. It appears that no good news is coming out these days.

This my favorite performance of his:
