Where in Cairo...

Rugbynut - 4-22-2005 at 11:21 PM

Hello All,

I will be in Cairo for a couple of weeks and was wondering where I may purchase a beginner oud and what I may expect in price. I have read on these forums about a few places in Cairo but can't remember where. I have never played the oud before and thus not looking for a real expensive oud, just one to learn on of good quality.
If anyone knows of a store or stores I would really appreciate it. If you could include an address that would GREAT!
Thanks in advance
Rubynut

Hi Rubynut,
Your best bet is Maurice Shehata. He is more expensive than others , but he is honest and great to deal with. His contact info and the address are in his webpage.
Fathi Amin is another excellent maker, I am not sure about his work though.
The oud maker who makes the Iraqi style instruments for the students at beit el oud el Araby is Gaafar. His cell phone number is:
0122712573

As a rule of thumb, stay away from Mahammad Ali street and tourist areas!

Hi

I think Mourice is your best bet as Fathi Amin can be very expensive and Ali Jaafar doesnt speak English at all (and his Arabic is not common)

Thanks guys. Maurice Shehata, what part of Cairo is his shop? I am more familiar with Ma'adi than anywhere else but I am sure I can find it, I do speak a little Egyptian so I can find my way around.
Thanks for the help
