Peter Kyvelos Oud

Mike - 5-18-2005 at 05:53 AM

As promised...photos of my friend's Kyvelos oud. He also has another one that he has owned since the late 70s or early 80s. I'll try to get shots of that one too.

Mike - 5-18-2005 at 05:54 AM

What type of wood is this? Maybe Dincer, Doc, or Jameel can help us out. It is very cool looking though.

Mike - 5-18-2005 at 05:56 AM

A side shot.

Jonathan - 5-18-2005 at 06:30 AM

Sapelle wood, maybe??

Jameel - 5-18-2005 at 07:45 AM

Nice oud, Mike. The unusual looking wood is probably lacewood. The other is difficult to identify from the photo. Maybe mahogany?

Beautiful oud! Peter is a friend of mine and I went to his house last weekend to get an oud from him...I don't have my camera but when I get it I will send a photo of my oud to everyone. Mike, can your friend send a sound clip by any chance? This is oud is beautiful! Amos

hello,

That is one of the things that I love when I go into Peter's shop. It reminds me of how some stores used to be when I was a kid. It fills you with possibilities when you go inside, look at the instruments (Oud or otherwise) that are in that glass case upon the wall on the right or when you see his fiberglass cases that are behind the counter or the pictures that are along the walls as you then peer in the back to see Christos working with instruments that are around him as well as the news being on from the tv that is on the left hand side. That oud is absoulutely beautiful and if you can get a sound sample i'd love to hear it.
While I have only a student model, and that does the job nicely, i'd love to hear what one of peters would sound like as one day I would love to upgrade to something better as I am a little bit shy to ask him if I can try the oud's that he makes. Since Peter is the only luthier that I know in the Mass area (it takes me an hour to get to his shop from where I live) he is the only one that I go to when my instrument needs strings or if I have questions that my teacher can't answer.
I appeal to anyone who lives in the Mass area. If you haven't been to his shop then go there sometime. It is absolutely amazing and Peter and Christos are wonderful people to talk to.

Does anybody else have any photos of Kyvelos ouds that they can post?
Thanks

Jameel - 8-2-2005 at 10:57 AM

here you go Jonathan

Jameel - 8-2-2005 at 10:58 AM

another

Jonathan - 8-2-2005 at 11:02 AM

Thanks, Jameel. Any chance you have photos of the back of them?

Jonathan - 8-2-2005 at 02:39 PM

When there is a lot of inlay in the fingerboard, do you run the risk of having different wear rates between the wood and the sedef, causing buzzing years later? Or, do the ebony and the sedef generally wear at the same rate? Generally, how thick will that inlay be? Jameel, the pictures are amazing.

Hi Jameel,
Is that Al's oud? I have been in love with that particular oud since the minute I saw it! And the sound (if it is Al's) is incomparable! Another classic masterpiece by Peter...someday when I am a millionaire I'll own 100 of them! All the best, Amos

Jonathan - 8-3-2005 at 06:08 AM

Amos, if I remember right, I think you might have said in a post a long time ago that Al was your teacher, and that you got a Kyvelos off of him. Can you post pictures of that one? Also, do you know if Al recorded with the Kyvelos, or did he use another?

Jameel - 8-3-2005 at 06:32 AM

Amos. Yes that's Al's Kyvelos. I'll post a file later from his CD that features one of these ouds.

Jonathan - 8-3-2005 at 09:45 AM

The tone that he gets on that cd is just great. Somebody posted one of the tracks a while back. I will see if I can find it.

Jonathan - 8-3-2005 at 09:48 AM

Somebody posted this a while back, from his solo cd. So that is one of his Kyvelos ouds? Very sweet. Of course, with playing like that, I think he could sound good on anything.

Hi guys,
Yes, Al is my teacher...I no longer have the kyvelos that I got through al, but I have another oud that I got from Mr. Kyvelos recently...I still don't have a digital camera, but I will try to get a photo of my oud on the site for you. I have to say that Al is one of the best oud players out there today, in my opinion. He is mostly self-taught on the oud and studied classical Turkish music and theory from the late master Kanuni Esber Koprucu. Al teaches at Simon's Arabic Music Retreat every year. His website is still offline, but if any of you guys have interest in his cd, U2U me and I will try to make a list of all of you who want one, and see if Al can send you some copies. I think some of you have asked me before, but I have been so busy that I haven't had a chance to talk to Al about it.
All did record his CD 'From Kef to Classical' mostly (if not entirely) with one or several of his Kyvelos ouds. The sweet, perfect sound of Peter's ouds comes through so beautifully on Al's CD, and I hope you all get a chance to hear it!
All the best, Amos

Jonathan - 8-4-2005 at 02:54 PM

Al's self-taught on the oud? Man, his playing is awesome! Did you sell the Kyvelos that you got through Al? If you have any photos of that one, please post them, too. Did you get another Kyvelos?

Jonathan - 8-17-2005 at 04:42 AM

If anybody out there happens to know of a used Kyvelos for sale, I would appreciate it if you would let me know.
Thanks

Zaynidin - 10-20-2006 at 01:23 AM

Greetings All.

I was just wondering, is "Amos" that is posting on the site here, by any chance THE "Amos Hoffman" that plays with Avishai Cohen!?

Excuse my ignorance

Regards
Zaynidin

If anybody has a used Kyvelos for sale, I'm still interested.
Thanks

Amos - 10-22-2006 at 07:26 AM

Hi everyone,
Zaynidin, i am not amos hoffman...but i understand the confusion considering that there are not many who share our name...
Andy, I was at peter's shop just a few months ago, and chris was working on his bouzoukis (as usual) and also ouds. Chris makes some of the finest bouzkoukis i have ever come across, and he also recently made a superb baroque lute. those guys are amazing.
