"The Arabs of Spain and Sicily were the first to bring the lute to Europe. It eas found exclusively in Italy and Iberian <b>wrench</b>ula
until the 14th century, when its use extended to the rest of the continent. The fact that the instrument was easy to play and to carry, and loaned
itself to the execution of all the voices of a polyphonic composition assured its considerable popularity during the Renaissance"
Francis Biggi (scholar and liuto player)

"The Hungarian medieval lute was known as the koboz and the this term is also used by the Hungarians for simpler Romanian cobza when
played by Hungarians in Romania."

How can I get in touch with the maker of the first, elaborately decorated instrument? I would like to purchase one for accompaniments of "Las
Cantigas de Samta Maria" What a beautiful instrument!!! Thank you very much, Dr. Stefan-Louis Bayne

hi Stefan,
In Spain there are some builders who do this type of Oud you can see some in the following links.
Also there is a luthier in Casablanca Belhaiba Khalib that has made Ouds of this type for the group “cinco siglos”, you can see photos in the web

I've found this photo: Claudia Caffagni of the ensemble La Reverdie with a medieval lute

Though not as pretty as Ms. Caffagni, Jacob Heringman is an excellent lutenist based in London. His brother is married to my wife's cousin, so we're
family, sort of...

Hi,
another similar lute...

DJdog - 5-18-2006 at 09:22 AM
I've just completed the manuscript for five of the "Cantigas de Santa Maria", written for small ensemble - one plucked string instrument, one bowed
string instrument, one wind instrument and one percussion instrument. In a month or so I will do a studio recording of these cantigas, and will
publish the sheet music. I will be playing oud on these recordings, but it would be nice to vary the playing by using a little medieval lute like the
one you show. Would it be possible for you to let us know how to contact the luthier who makes the instrument in the photo? It's beautiful!

Here's the site of a Spanish luthier who specializes in medieval stringed instruments. Beautiful pieces.

Well not really medieval but may be of interest, specially for Kasos and his Marco Polo project:
In fact a french baroque musicien is presently performing in Syria mixing his ensemble xviii-21 with syrian classical arabic one called Twais. It is
a kind of official french culture funded exchange. Since a year more or less they have prepared a hommage to Pietro della Valle a XVIth century
italian misician-voyageur to Turkey, Ottoman, India etc, where he learned languages and music.
Here is a link to the web of xviii-21
http://www.xviii-21.com/english/engpresentation/engpresentation.htm
And this one with some info on the project.
http://www.babelmed.net/index.php?menu=31&cont=2093&lingua=...
What it is not clear for me is whether the concerts are with the two ensembles performing together at the same time or one after the other.
A cd may be published after summer this year.
Excuse me if i divert fm the central subject of this post
May be should be better to open another topic Baroque Lute.
Also i become curious to know more on musical collaborations between medieval and baroque lutes with present arabic ouds. What could be the sound of
those instruments played together ?
Finally i read i think somewhere in this forums that baroque music was "chromatically" near the arabic music. Wasn't you Stephan Andalous ?
